SPORTS SHORTS: MHS girls golf falls to Mason City by 2

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown girls golf team lost a CIML Iowa Conference dual to Mason City by two strokes on Tuesday at Mason City Country Club, 190-192.

Sophomore Kyra Feldman led the Bobcats with a 44, her best nine-hole score of the year, and she was given runner-up honors on a cardback over teammate Amber Henson, who also shot a 44.

Rounding out the counting scores were Emma Younkin and Norah Wilson, who both shot a 52.

Thea Lunning was the meet medalist for the Mohawks with a 40, and following her were Sophie Lunning with a 49, Alyssa Alert with a 50 and Ella Amundson with a 51.

Marshalltown next plays in the Southeast Polk Invite at Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

MHS girls tennis blanked by Ames

AMES — The Marshalltown girls tennis team was swept on the road against Ames on Tuesday, 11-0.

The closest match came at No. 5 doubles, where Carly Streets and America Dominguez lost in straight sets to Hannah Huang and Haley Reeves, 7-6, 6-3.

Three of the six singles matches were 6-0, 6-0, victories for the Little Cyclones. Grace Fisher had the closest match in the singles competition, losing 6-1, 6-3, to Ally Roeth.

Marshalltown will host Waterloo East on Saturday morning in the Class 2A Region 4 tournament, starting at 9 a.m.

Tigers sweep ICCAC weekly honors

AMES — The Marshalltown Community College baseball team took home two Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I honors from the past week.

Tiger first baseman Luis Menendez was named the ICCAC Division I Player of the Week, while David Davila earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Menendez went 13-for-24 last week, including three doubles and two home runs. He also had five RBIs and scored seven runs in that span. Menendez finished the regular season batting .296.

Davila earned a victory over Southwestern Community College, holding the Spartans to just one run and five hits. He also struck out nine and improved his season record to 5-5.

Fritz honored doubly by ARC softball

PELLA — Central College senior and former East Marshall pitcher Mariah Fritz was named the American Rivers Conference female athlete and pitcher of the week.

Fritz led the Dutch to an American Rivers Conference tournament title, pitching 14 innings and allowing 11 hits and two runs in two games on Saturday, an 8-2 win over the University of Dubuque in the semifinal and a 3-0 shutout of Coe College in the final. The complete-game shutout against the Kohawks was the second this season for Fritz and sixth of her career.

Central will host a four-team regional in the NCAA Division III Championships this weekend, starting with a first-round game against Lake Forest College on Friday.

Vest, Reivers headed to golf nationals

ANKENY — The Iowa Western women’s golf team won the NJCAA Region XI tournament on April 27 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny for a ninth-straight year.

Former Marshalltown standout Kassy Vest was a part of this ninth-straight regional title for the Reivers, as she finished with a four-round score of 304 to tie for ninth individually. The first three rounds were played to a full 18 holes but the final round was cut to nine due to weather.

Iowa Western will travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., on May 13 for the NJCAA Championships, which will be played at LPGA International from May 13-16.

MHS baseball intrasquad game Friday

The Marshalltown High School baseball team will be playing its annual intrasquad game on Friday at the MHS diamond.

The nine-inning game will begin at 6 p.m. and include members of the Bobcats’ varsity, sophomore and freshman squads.

Admission is free for the contest, which will be the only public competition for the team prior to the season’s home opener against Newton on May 21.

In the event of rain, Saturday, May 11 is the makeup date for the scrimmage.
