SPORTS SHORTS: MHS offering boys basketball camps

The Marshalltown Bobcat boys basketball team and head coach Michael Appel will be hosting a basketball camp for kids from 1st through 12th grade.

There will be two different sessions, on running from June 11-14 for Grades 4-through-12 and one going from June 17-20 for grades 1-through-3.

Both camps will cost $50 or $60 after June 1, and included will be a camp t-shirt or a mini basketball for the 1st-through-3rd grade participants.

The camps will emphasize a combination of skill development and competitive-driven drills and games to enhance the fundamentals for basketball players of all grade levels.

Rebels roughed up by No. 1 Columbus

WATERLOO — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer team fell on the road to Class 1A No. 1 Waterloo Columbus on Tuesday, 7-0.

Eli Thede and Ethan Gienger both had two shots to lead the Rebels (5-5) while Thede, Adam Hoy and Jackson Kiburis each had shots on goal. Kale Hasselman recorded six saves to go along with his seven goals allowed in 80 minutes between the posts.

GC/G-R next travels to face Hudson on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Silver wins, Comets 8th at A-P invite

PARKERSBURG — The BCLUW boys track and field team placed eighth at the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcon Invitational on Monday with 38 team points.

Caleb Silver won the 1,600-meter run for the Comets with a time of 4 minutes, 42.98 seconds, in his final warm-up before the state-qualifying meets tonight.

The 4×100 relay team of Ben Paper, Carson Hoffman, Joe Mason and Jesse Moore placed second with a 46.53, while the shuttle hurdle team of Coby Willett, Koty Kruse, Neifer Ralston and Hoffman and the 4×800 team of Silver, Treye Teske, Noah Gallentine and Kolton Keller both placed third.

East Marshall tied for 10th in the meet with 34 points. Austin Elliott took second in the 100 with a time of 11.5 and Hunter Vilez was second in the discus with a throw of 131 feet, 3 inches.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished in 13th on the team standings with 27.5 points. Sam Schildroth won the 400 in a time of 55.35 and he was followed by Dylan Riffey in fourth with a 57.34. Paul Brockett took third in the 3,200 with an 11:09.34.
