GC/G-R girls tennis takes 2nd at NICL

WATERLOO — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ tennis team took second place at the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament on Monday at Byrnes Park, led by senior Erika Johnson’s runner-up finish at No. 4 singles.

Johnson went 3-2 during the round-robin format, highlighted by wins against opponents from Union, Aplington-Parkersburg and South Hardin. She defeated Union’s Maddie Ruth and South Hardin’s Sarah England by 7-2 margins, and edged A-P’s Kaitlin Cuvelier 5-4.

GC/G-R sophomore Whitney Laube at No. 5 singles also went 3-2 on the day with 8-1 wins over A-P’s Maddie Krausman and South Hardin’s Alexiss Bradshaw and a 7-2 triumph over Dike-New Hartford’s Allison Fobian.

The Spartans’ No. 2 doubles team of Emerson Kracht and Johnson finished 3-2 as well with wins over Union, Aplington-Parkersburg and Dike-New Hartford.

Only one of the single-set dual meets would have gone GC/G-R’s way, but the Spartans still managed to outscore everyone but host Waterloo Columbus for the runner-up spot in the final team standings. The Sailors won with 54 points, followed by GC/G-R with 31, South Hardin with 29.5, Aplington-Parkersburg (26), Union Community (25.5) and Dike-New Hartford (23).

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck returns to Byrnes Park on Wednesday for the Class 1A Region 4 singles and doubles tournament starting at 9 a.m.
