SPORTS SHORTS: STC’s Rohach reaches girls state golf

OSKALOOSA — South Tama County senior Madison Rohach qualified for the state golf tournament on Monday by tying for fifth individually with a 96 in the Class 3A Region 3 tournament at Oskaloosa Public Golf Course.

The Trojans finished in fifth as a team with a 432.

Rohach will play in the 3A state tournament on May 28 and 29 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Markle one-hits Madrid as Trojans win

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall baseball team kicked off its season with a 10-0 victory over Madrid in five innings on Monday.

Senior Nat Markle through five shut-out innings while allowing just one hit and one walking and striking out one. Josh Larsen had the big bat for the Trojans (1-0), going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Markle also had a two-run double, while Kinnick Christensen had a hit and three RBIs and Cameron Bannister had a hit and two RBIs.

West Marshall is back at it today with a road meeting against Pella Christian, starting at 7:30 p.m.

South Tama topples East Marshall 11-4

LE GRAND — The South Tama County baseball team opened up with an 11-4 road win over East Marshall on Monday.

Carter Kriegel picked up the victory on the mound for the Trojans (1-0), while Wesley Hamor took the loss for the Mustangs (0-1) after giving up six hits and two earned runs in five innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Gage Hulin led East Marshall at the plate with a 2-for-3 line and a run scored and Hamor went 2-for-4. Garrett Kerber smacked a two-run double as well.

The Mustangs next play a home doubleheader against Vinton-Shellsburg on Wednesday, while South Tama has its home opener against PCM today.

Comets blanked by Baxter baseball

BAXTER — The BCLUW baseball team took an 8-0 loss on the road to Baxter to start the season on Monday.

Ray Callaway was the losing pitcher for the Comets (0-1) with three innings pitched, three hits allowed and four strikeouts. Carter Nelson got the win for the Bolts (1-0) after throwing a complete-game no-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

BCLUW is back at it on Thursday with a road meeting against HLV in Victor.
