Tigers go 2-3 vs. No. 10 Iowa Western

The Marshalltown Community College baseball team picked up two wins and fell three times to NJCAA Division I No. 10 Iowa Western on Sunday and Monday.

First the Tigers (10-27) and Reivers split a doubleheader in Council Bluffs on Sunday, with Iowa Western winning game one, 10-0, and MCC taking game two, 6-4.

David Davila was the winning pitcher in game two after allowing four earned runs and seven hits while striking out two and walking four. Jacob Medcalf recorded the save by allowing only one hit and striking out two in the seventh inning.

Elijah Bergeron finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two, while Tyler Coleman and Quin Hall each had doubles with Coleman driving in two runs and Hall one.

In game one Reiver pitcher Braedyn McLaughlin pitched a five-inning one-hitter, with Tom Josten recording the only hit with a double.

Monday’s games started with the continuation of an earlier game between the two teams that was postponed due to rain. The Tigers were up 5-4 in the fourth inning after the halted play, and they were able to maintain that lead and even add a run to pull off a 6-4 victory.

Walter Hernandez was the winning pitcher after throwing a complete game and allowing six hits and four runs while striking out nine and walking three. Coleman was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Reece Blay was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs and Ryan Carter was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

Iowa Western took the next two games, however, winning 17-2 and 10-5. Luis Menendez was the most effective Tiger batter during both games, finishing a combined 4-for-6 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, including both scores in game two.

MCC is on the road next for a doubleheader against Southwestern in Creston, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
