SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat baseball sweeps DM North

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown baseball team mowed down Des Moines North on Friday night, sweeping the Polar Bears 15-1 and 17-1 in a pair of five-inning games.

In the opener, Carson Williams earned his first varsity win on the mound with four innings of one-run ball in which he walked one and struck out five. Williams also was one of three players with three hits for the Bobcats (8-3). Joseph Harris was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Wade Canaday was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, and Williams was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Tate Kuehner finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Will Van Buren was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Joe Burnes also had two hits.

The Bobcats breezed past the Polar Bears (0-9) in the nightcap, scoring 11 runs in the first half an inning on the way to a 17-1 triumph. Blake Trowbridge allowed one run on four hits and a walk over three innings for the win, striking out three.

Dru Dobbins had the big day at the dish as he went 2-for-4 with six RBIs. He had a two-run single and a three-run single in the first inning alone, adding a run-scoring grounder in the third.

Trojans tab 24 hits to beat Mustangs

GILMAN — Kaden Davis went 5-for-5 with six RBIs to help lead the West Marshall baseball team (8-2, 3-0) to an 18-7, six-inning victory over East Marshall in Friday’s NICL West Division clash.

Davis scored twice and had a three-run triple as a part of West Marshall’s 24-hit parade. Cameron Bannister was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Kinnick Christensen, Brayden Evertsen and Jake Tollefson had three hits apiece, including a home run for Tollefson.

Ryan Reyerson and Nat Markle combined on a five-hitter for the Trojan pitching staff. Reyerson struck out six in 4 1/3 innings for the win.

Five different players had one hit each for East Marshall (4-6, 2-2). Wesley Hamor had an RBI and a double, while Dane Thompson plated a pair of runs.

Comets hold off Rebels for first win

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team picked up its first win of the season, outlasting Gladbrook-Reinbeck 11-9 in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-4, 2-2) held an 8-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings before Jack Garber hit a grand slam in BCLUW’s five-run fourth. The Comets (1-6, 1-3) outscored the Rebels 5-1 over the last three innings to secure the win.

Mason Yantis had a two-run single while Colton Keller and Angus Callaway both had run-scoring hits for BCLUW. Ray Callaway earned the pitching win in relief of Koty Kruse, allowing two runs on no hits but seven walks over four innings, striking out six.

Tyler Tscherter went 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer and four RBIs to lead Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
