SPORTS SHORTS: Cyclones visit ’Bama for Big 12/SEC

IRVING, Texas — The Iowa State women’s basketball team will face Alabama in the Big 12/SEC Challenge for the 2019-2020 season, traveling to face the Razorbacks on Dec. 5 in Tuscaloosa.

The Big 12 and Southeast Conference released its pairings for the event on Monday.

Iowa State and Alabama will be the only Challenge game played on Dec. 5, as defending national champion Baylor hosts Georgia and Ole Miss visits Texas Tech on Dec. 4. The remainder of games will be played Dec. 7-8.

The Dec. 7 schedule includes Kansas State at Arkansas, LSU at Oklahoma, Oklahoma State at Texas A&M and Auburn at TCU. Florida visits Kansas, Tennessee hosts Texas and Mississippi State hosts West Virginia on Dec. 8.

Game times will be announced at a later date.

This event has been held since 2014. The two conferences have split the 10 matchups each of the last two seasons, with Iowa State beating Arkansas 91-82 last winter in Ames. The Cyclones also defeated Auburn, 67-64, at Hilton Coliseum as a part of the Preseason WNIT.

Iowa hosts Clemson in Big Ten/ACC

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will host Clemson on Dec. 4 as part of the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the Hawkeyes and Tigers.

Last season the ACC defeated the Big Ten 8-6 in the Challenge. Iowa is 3-9 all-time in the event, including last year’s 105-71 loss to top-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

The Hawkeyes also lost to Florida State of the ACC, 71-67, in the Junkanoo Jam Championship game in Bimini, Bahamas, but beat North Carolina State 79-61 in Greensboro, N.C., to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

All 14 games of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge will be played Dec. 4-5. Game times and television coverage will be announced at a later date.
