SPORTS SHORTS: Local hole-in-one at Wandering Creek

Doug Minor of Marshalltown recently scored a hole-in-one at Wandering Creek Golf Course.

Minor converted the ace on the par-3 seventh hole at Wandering Creek, using his 7-iron to hit the 114-yard shot on June 13.

Optimist golfers qualify for nationals

A total of 81 golfers ages 18 and under competed for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship Iowa District Qualifier on June 6 at Elmwood Country Club, hosted by the Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club.

Qualifying for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Trump Doral Resort in Miami in July were:

Boys 16-18 — Jack Dumas, Le Claire, 66; Kyle Spence, Coralville, 69; Connor Van Weelden, Ames, 70 (won playoff).

Boys 14-15 — Grant Greazel, Marshalltown, 66; Maxwell Tjoa, Cedar Falls, 73; Jackson Yurgae, West Des Moines, 79; Drew Munson, Carroll, 80; Cody Pearce, Urbandale, 81.

Boys 12-13 — Owen Howe, Des Moines, 85.

Girls 15-18 — Kiki Guo, Washington, 77 (won playoff); Abigail Marting, Dubuque, 77; Anna Nacos, Dubuque, 79 (won playoff).

Girls 13-14 — Hallie Yates, West Des Moines, 85.

BCLUW hosting youth wrestling camp

CONRAD — The BCLUW High School wrestling room will be the site of the Wolf Creek Wrestling Camp of Champs on July 22-23 for wrestlers in grades 1-12 (for the 2018-19 school year).

Clinicians for this camp will be Chris Bono, the head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin, and associate head coach Jon Reader.

Bono was the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year in 2017 during his tenure at South Dakota State. Both Bono and Reader were national champion wrestlers at Iowa State and three-time All-Americans.

The two-day camp will run from 8-10 a.m. and 10:15-11:45 a.m. for campers in grades 6-12, while grades 1-5 will go from 12:15-1:30 p.m. both days.

Cost is $30 for the younger age group and $40 for the older division.
