SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang comeback falls one run short

ACKLEY — The East Marshall baseball team scored three unanswered runs in the last two innings, but the Mustangs needed another as AGWSR held on for a 4-3 win in Friday’s NICL West Division contest.

East Marshall (7-12, 4-5) trailed 4-0 through five innings before striking for two runs in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh. Wesley Hamor had two run-scoring singles and Zach Jacobson added another, but the Mustangs came up one run shy of extending the game.

Hamor took the loss, allowing one earned run on six hits over five innings, striking out six. Austin Elliott tossed a scoreless sixth.

Hamor and Jacobson accounted for the Mustangs’ only hits against Luke Starr and Caleb Bartling. Starr went five innings for the win, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Chase Gratopp walked twice and scored twice for the Mustangs, who play Monday at West Marshall.

Rebel baseball outlasts Grundy Center

REINBECK — William Kiburis held Grundy Center to one run over 4 1/3 innings and Cullen Eiffler withstood the Spartans for the final 2 2/3 frames as Gladbrook-Reinbeck prevailed 4-3 in Thursday’s NICL West Division clash.

The host Rebels (10-6, 6-3) took advantage of seven walks issued by Grundy Center pitcher Tanner Appel, four of which went to Tyler Tscherter. Tscherter scored once but wasn’t allowed to add to his season total of 10 home runs, which ranks him second in the state across all classes.

Instead, Kale Hasselmann went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead G-R to victory.

Austin Knaack had two hits and an RBI to lead Grundy Center (8-9, 5-5).

No. 5 Don Bosco drubs Wolverines

GILBERTVILLE — Rain washed out the second game of Thursday’s Iowa Star Conference doubleheader, but one was probably enough for visiting GMG.

Class 1A No. 5 Don Bosco rapped out 14 hits on its way to a 17-2, four-inning victory over the Wolverines on Thursday night.

Blaze Krull went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Aaron Fleming was 1-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored to lead the GMG bats. Kolton Gill added an RBI single for the Wolverines (9-10), who led 2-0 after the first half inning before the Dons got their turn to hit.

Fleming suffered the loss on the mound for GMG, giving up 11 hits and 11 runs — eight earned — over three innings. He walked one and struck out one.

STC baseball swept by Central DeWitt

DE WITT — The South Tama baseball team dropped a WaMaC West Division doubleheader to host Central DeWitt on Thursday, falling 8-3 and 6-5 in league action.

In the opener, Gavin Jimenez had two hits to lead STC (6-14) while Carter Kriegel was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mickey Wanatee had a double and Lane Lekin added a single.

Cael Kellogg allowed seven runs on seven hits over three innings for the loss.

Kriegel took the loss in game two as the host Sabres got him for four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off the Trojan comeback.

Lekin went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead STC offensively. The Trojans trailed 6-2 before scoring three times in the sixth to inch within one run.

South Tama softball ends 15-game skid

LA PORTE CITY — The South Tama softball team snapped a 15-game losing streak by beating Union Community 11-1 in Thursday’s non-conference tilt.

Ashlynn Ellenbecker scattered six hits over five innings for the win, allowing an unearned run while striking out six and walking none.

Offensively the Trojans tallied just seven singles, led by Abby Sandvick with a 2-for-3 day at the plate that included three RBIs and a run scored. Morgan Haughey was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Gwen Upah and Shelby Slaven both drove in a pair of runs as well for South Tama (3-19).

G-R softball roughed up by Spartans

GLADBROOK — Grundy Center belted out 17 hits and the Spartans stopped the Gladbrook-Reinbeck softball team 12-2 in six innings in Thursday’s NICL West Division meeting.

The Spartans (10-8, 6-4) secured the season sweep of the Rebels, with both games being decided by 10 runs. Sydney Mathews finished 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs and three RBIs to lead Grundy Center.

Alyssa Morgan had an RBI single and Jada Schlampp had a run-scoring double as Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, but that was all the Rebels (1-11, 0-9) could muster in their 11th consecutive loss. Rachel Cooley was tagged for 11 hits and 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings.
