SPORTS SHORTS: Rebels roll into regional soccer finals

REINBECK — Madison McMartin scored a hat trick and the No. 14 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer team advanced to the Class 1A Region 5 finals with a 9-0 shellacking of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Friday night.

The Rebels (13-5) got goals from five different players while enduring another night of rain on the pitch. Jacque Kuester had two goals and an assist while Taylor Gienger tallied two goals of her own for GC/G-R.

Belen Ellenberger had a five-point night on one goal and three assists, while Katie Clark registered her second goal of the season. Abby Hamann added an assist to the offensive stat sheet.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck goalkeeper Carsen Hamann had seven saves in 70 minutes before giving way to Makenzie Martens for the final 10 minutes of action against G-H-V (5-11).

The Rebels roll into the Region 5 finals on Monday, where they will face No. 4 Gilbert (17-0) in Gilbert. Game time is set for 6 p.m. with a state tournament berth on the line.

Mustangs blank Des Moines Roosevelt

ALLEMAN — The Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball squad started out its stay at the North Polk Tournament with a 7-0 victory over Des Moines Roosevelt on Friday night.

The Mustangs (5-3) and Roughriders both finished with four hits, but four walks issued by Roosevelt hurler Madaline Thomas made the difference as East Marshall’s Kodie Hoskey struck out six and did not issue a free pass.

Maria Rasmusson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Madison Duncan was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead East Marshall offensively. Juliana Arifi added a single for the Mustangs, who face Gilbert followed by North Polk today.

Comets split at Ballard Tournament

HUXLEY — The Class 1A No. 13 BCLUW softball team suffered its second loss in as many meetings with Ballard but bounced back to defeat 2A No. 8 Central Springs on Friday at the Ballard Tournament.

Ballard topped the Comets for the second time this season, winning 9-1 in six innings, before BCLUW edged off Central Springs 3-2 in the nightcap.

Bailey Ashton pitched all seven frames against Central Springs, holding the Panthers to eight hits while striking out six. BCLUW got its three runs in the sixth while Central Springs pushed two across in the seventh.

Kiersten Kruse was 3-for-4 to lead the Comet bats, while Parker Scurr, Olivia Hughes, Easton Swanson and Lili Wilson each had a single. Jaelyn Allen drove in two runs and Kennedy Williams added an RBI.

Kruse took the loss against Ballard in 4 1/3 innings. Scurr plated BCLUW’s lone run in the third with a single up the middle to drive in Ashton’s pinch-runner Kenna Paxson.

Scurr, Kruse, Hughes and Swanson had the Comets’ four hits in the loss.

BCLUW meets Clarke of Osceola at 9:45 a.m. today and Woodward-Granger at 3 p.m.

East Marshall outlasts GMG baseball

GREEN MOUNTAIN — Austin Elliott pitched five strong innings for the win and also drove in a run as the East Marshall baseball team doubled up on GMG, beating the host Wolverines 6-3 on Friday night.

Elliott struck out three and walked one over five frames, scattering seven hits and two runs. Wesley Hamor tossed the final two frames for the save.

Dane Thompson went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead East Marshall (3-4), while Elliott and Gage Hulin both singled and drove in a run.

Blaze Krull took the loss for GMG (3-2). No other stats were available as of press time.

South Hardin holds down Comets, 10-2

BEAMAN — Cade Spieker struck out 13 and finished one out shy of going the distance as South Hardin stymied BCLUW 10-2 in Friday’s NICL West Division baseball contest.

Spieker walked one and allowed only four hits in the win, while Seth Lindaman needed one pitch to get the final out of the game. The Tigers (2-2, 1-1) led 10-0 before BCLUW got its two tallies in the bottom of the seventh.

Koty Kruse took the hard-luck loss for the Comets, allowing two runs over four innings while striking out eight. He also had one of BCLUW’s four singles.

Jack Garber had an RBI single, while Treye Teske and Dalton Critchfield each had a hit.

The Comets (0-4, 0-2) made all of their nine defensive errors in the final three frames, when South Hardin’s lead ballooned from 2-0 to 10-0.
