SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawk softball scores first victory

TRAER — The North Tama softball team split a pair of games at its own round-robin tournament on Saturday, collecting its first win of the season in the process.

The Redhawks (1-6) outlasted Iowa Valley to start the day with a 12-10 victory that lasted only four innings because of a time limit. Megan Popelka pitched all four frames for North Tama, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three.

Rylee McLean led the Redhawk bats by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Molly Kvidera had two hits and scored twice, while Carissa Calderwood, Sable Fehr and Chloe Feisel each had a double.

Class 1A No. 2 Lisbon ended the Redhawks’ day on a sour note, scoring a 25-0, three-inning victory over the hosts. The Lions had eight hits, half of them going for extra bases, and got a one-hitter from senior pitcher Sam Schrantz.

Feisel got the only hit of the game for the Redhawks. Popelka and McLean shared the pitching duties, walking a combined 14 Lisbon batters.

South Tama softball blanks GMG 12-0

TAMA — The South Tama County softball team scored its first win of the season, beating GMG 12-0 in three innings in a non-conference clash Friday.

Trojan sophomore pitcher Ashlynn Ellenbecker pitched a no-hitter, striking out five in the win.

South Tama (1-4) got just two hits of its own but benefited from 12 walks issued by GMG pitching. Shelby Slaven and Gwen Upah recorded singles for STC.

No statistics were available for GMG as of press time.

North Tama nets third-straight triumph

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team notched its third-straight win with Friday’s 9-5 victory over Clarksville in Iowa Star Conference action.

Hale Hulme went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs for the Redhawks (3-1), while Tate Payne and Ryan McLean both had two hits. Payne stole three bases and scored three times, while McLean had a double, drove in a run and scored twice.

Izach Henson got the win in relief of Hulme, allowing two unearned runs on one hit over three innings, striking out five.

Wolverines topple West Marshall late

STATE CENTER — Class 2A No. 4 Dike-New Hartford got to West Marshall’s bullpen and the Wolverines beat the host Trojan baseball team in Friday’s cross-NICL contest, 9-4.

Dike-New Hartford (8-0) broke a 2-all tie by scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh against three different relievers, highlighted by a grand slam for Devon Kollasch.

West Marshall (3-2) answered with two runs in its last at-bat but could do no more. Cameron Bannister led the Trojans going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Kinnick Christensen, Brayden Evertsen and Ryan Reyerson each added one hit. Reyerson’s was an RBI double.

Reyerson got the no-decision for his five innings of work on the mound for West Marshall. He allowed two hits and one unearned run, walking three while striking out 12.

Bobcat Golf Outing set for June 13

The 17th annual Marshalltown High School athletic fundraising golf outing will be on Thursday, June 13 at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown.

It is a four-person best shot tournament with both morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session tees off at 8 a.m. with the afternoon session teeing off at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Cost is $60 for individual golfers with a series of sponsorship levels for foursomes. Cost includes golf, lunch and gifts.
