Third-ranked Fort Dodge finishes off MHS

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE - Marshalltown freshman Paige Wertzberger rips a single to center field during the second game of Wednesday’s CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader against Class 5A No. 3 Fort Dodge. Wertzberger had one of the Bobcats’ three hits as the Dodgers won both games of the twinbill, 15-0 and 13-0.

Fort Dodge freshman Jalen Adams no-hit the Marshalltown softball team for the second time this season and the Dodgers finished off a CIML Iowa Conference season sweep of the Bobcats by winning twice on Wednesday night at the MHS diamond.

The Class 5A No. 3 Dodgers (21-5, 7-5) defeated Marshalltown 15-0 in four innings in the first game and 13-0 in the five-inning nightcap. Adams pitched a perfect game in the opener, striking out 10 of the 12 batters she faced while also going 2-for-2 at the plate.

Fort Dodge hammered out 17 hits against Kailee Pollard (2-10).

In the second game, the Bobcats (5-23, 1-13) got their first three hits of the season series but couldn’t make it past five innings.

In four meetings this summer, Fort Dodge has racked up a 52-0 advantage over Marshalltown and in just 15 innings worth of softball.

Haley Wills struck out four in five shutout innings for the Dodgers in game two, allowing singles to Ella Grife, Paige Wertzberger and Emma McWherter, but none of the Bobcat runners reached as far as second base.

Grife singled in the first, Wertzberger singled in the second and McWherter singled in the fourth for Marshalltown.

Fort Dodge finished with 12 hits off MHS pitcher Avery Mull (2-10), led by Adams going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.

The Bobcats are back at home tonight, entertaining Urbandale at 5 p.m.
