No. 3 Pirates plunder G-R in district semis

ALBURNETT — Alburnett senior Keaton Parker pitched five dominant innings and drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the first, helping the third-ranked Pirates plunder Gladbrook-Reinbeck 10-0 in Wednesday’s Class 1A District 9 semifinal baseball game.

The Pirates (30-5) scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth frames before blasting away for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending the game early. Parker (10-2), meanwhile, allowed only two Gladbrook-Reinbeck hits over five innings for the win.

Alburnett got to G-R starting pitcher Tyler Tscherter (8-2) for nine hits and eight runs — six earned — over 5 1/3 innings. Tscherter walked five and struck out four before leaving with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Cullen Eiffler allowed all three inherited runners to score and two more of his own without getting an out as five-straight Pirates reached base against him to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Tscherter and Eiffler accounted for the only hits for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (16-12). Eiffler broke up Parker’s no-hitter with one out in the fourth and Tscherter led off the top of the sixth with a single. Caden Evans came on in relief and got the final three outs, and the Pirates ended the game in the home half.

Hunter Caves went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and three runs scored, while Parker and Luke Smith both had two hits for Alburnett. Austin Stallman drove in two runs. Parker finished with seven strikeouts, plunked Jackson Kiburis, and intentionally walked Tscherter with a runner on second base in the top of the third.

The Pirates will play host to North Tama (21-9) in Saturday’s 7 p.m. district finals in Alburnett.
