Canaday collects all-conference

9 Bobcats honored with selection to CIML Iowa Conference squads

The Marshalltown baseball team featured one of the top five hitters in the CIML Iowa Conference as well as one of the top five pitchers.

Bobcat senior Wade Canaday was both of them.

Canaday finished fourth among conference pitchers with a 1.54 earned run average while also ranking fifth in the league with a .393 batting average, helping lead the Bobcat baseball team to a .500 record in CIML Iowa play while earning the Marshalltown senior a spot on the all-conference first team for the first time in his career.

This marks the third all-conference honor for Canaday, who was an honorable mention as a sophomore and a second-team selection as a junior.

Marshalltown junior third baseman Joseph Harris earned his first all-conference honor of any kind, jumping right to the first team after batting .358 with a CIML Iowa-best 16 doubles.

Bobcat senior Tate Kuehner, who played center field when he wasn’t pitching, gained second-team selection after back-to-back years of earning honorable mention. Kuehner had more innings pitched (62 1/3) and strikeouts (83) than any other pitcher in the CIML Iowa Conference, posting a 2.81 ERA and a 5-4 record on the mound.

Marshalltown players earning honorable mention were seniors Dru Dobbins, Dylan Eygabroad and Blake Trowbridge, juniors Bennett Hageman and Will Van Buren, and sophomore Carson Williams.

Canaday’s top-five rank on both offense and defense made him one of only two players in the CIML Iowa to achieve such. Southeast Polk junior Evan Martin, a first-team outfielder, ranked second in the league with a .397 batting average and was fifth with a 1.56 ERA. Martin went 8-3 on the mound for the Rams, who were the division’s lone representative at the Class 4A state baseball tournament.

Canaday was second on the Bobcat roster with 13 doubles and four home runs, and tied for the team lead with Harris with 31 RBIs. On the mound, Canaday went 8-2 with a whopping 81 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings pitched, allowing just 12 earned runs (24 total), 39 hits and 22 combined walks and hit batters. Opponents hit just .191 against him.

Kuehner finished with a .264 batting average that included a team-leading 30 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
