Bobcats nab another win at Ottumwa

Autumn Finch

OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown volleyball team won for the fourth time in the last six days and started to show some swagger, sweeping Ottumwa 25-12, 25-17, 25-19, in Thursday’s cross-CIML showdown.

Erica Johnson and Autumn Finch both totaled 10 kills to lead the Bobcats (5-7), who served 65-for-67 with five aces in their second sweep of the season. Marshalltown hadn’t won a three-set sweep since the season-opening triumph at Des Moines Hoover.

Kyra Feldman finished with a team-high 15 digs and 21-for-21 serving with two aces, and Johnson served 15-for-15 with two aces as well. Lyris Kapayou added a fifth service ace for MHS, going 3-for-3 while pitching in defensively with eight digs.

Finch led the defense with four blocks.

“Autumn and Erica had a really good night at the net, but everyone swung really well,” said MHS head coach Chris Brees. “Was probably one of our most consistent hitting performances.

“Kyra had a strong defensive night and probably played with the most confidence she has had all season. Collectively it was a good blocking night for us — Autumn really shut them down.”

Madi Finch finished with 27 assists, two blocks and eight digs while serving 9-for-9. Hayden Oetker contributed four kills, Gabby Himes had three more and Madi added two kills.

Grace Fisher filed in with nine digs, and Madi and Johnson had eight apiece. Mayah Carson stepped in to serve 12-for-13.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday with a trip to the Cedar Falls Tournament.
