Diving victory buoys Marshalltown in Bobcat Invite

T-R PHOTO BY ANDREW ABADIE - Marshalltown’s CeCe Waltermire competes in the 100-yard breaststroke during Saturday’s Bobcat Invite at the Marshalltown High School pool. Waltermire placed 16th in the event with a time of 1 minute, 24.54 seconds.

The Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving team hosted the Bobcat Invite, finishing in seventh place out of nine teams.

Johnston won the meet with a total score of 335 points while Marshalltown totaled 70 points in its seventh-place finish.

“We had some good time drops,” Marshalltown head coach Angie Nelson said. “We had kind of a mixed bag overall so I would say we had a couple of girls cut seconds here and there. We had a couple of holds, where we didn’t gain any time [but] we just didn’t cut any time either. We had several of those. All in all, I was pretty pleased.

“I didn’t figure that we would be competing for a top spot today. We held on the lead that we gained in diving to finish seven out of nine so not too bad at all. I think that’s really good.”

The Bobcats’ only event win of the day came from diver Hannah Taylor. Taylor scored 402.15 points in the 11-dive event where she edged out Johnston’s Ciara Wheeler who finished with 400.65 points. Marshalltown’s Kaisa Stanley finished in sixth place with a score of 275.15 points.

“We had an awesome day on the diving the board,” Nelson said. “Hannah Taylor was just at her best from last season and it was a really close meet against the Johnston girl. [Taylor] did a nice job. She had a solid list. She had a new dive on her list with a reverse and a half. She put a really solid meet together. Four hundred is a great opening score for an 11-dive meet.”

The highest placing swimming individual came from Klaudia Hernandez. Hernandez finished seventh in the breaststroke where she swam a time of 1:18.71.

Marshalltown found most of its success in the relay races. The Bobcats took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a team of Samantha Propp, CeCe Waltermire, Hannah Case and Riley Robinson swimming a time of 2:17.79. The Bobcats placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle where they swam a time of 1:53 which was comprised of Taylor Jones, Cori Jorgenson, Waltermire and Hernandez. Marshalltown also placed eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay comprised of Jorgenson, Hernandez, Jones and Erin Stanley in which they swam a time of 4:14.80.

“We had some good splits in our relays today not only from our returning girls but also some from our freshmen,” Nelson said. “That was pretty exciting.”

“Most of all it’s a great learning experience so anytime that we’re in a meet like this that has some top seeds. You can take a look at some of those faster girls and watch over what their swimming style looks like and how fast they are moving. We’re learning. We are getting better but we are learning. I think anytime you get a chance to watch some of those other girls swim fast like that it, it teaches us a little bit more about what we can do.”
