GC/G-R gives chase to sixth-ranked Marion

TRAER — The South Tama Boys Cross Country Invitational featured a pair of ranked teams in Tuesday’s 5-kilometer race with Class 3A No. 6 Marion and 2A No. 8 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Marion cruised to a team win in which it placed its runners between second and sixth place.

Despite Marion’s win, GC/G-R finished in second place with a team score of 69 points, which for head coach Jackson Anderson was a valuable experience for his team.

“It was good for us running against Marion and to see some different competition,” Anderson said. “It’s just good to see unfamiliar faces and get put in uncomfortable situations. Going into we knew that they were going to be tough. I’m glad that they were here. I think they pulled us along a little bit. They definitely made all of our guys work a little bit harder. If I had to guess they probably had 25 runners and they were spread out throughout the entire course. There was just always somebody for our guys to go after. Good competing against them.”

Leading the way for GC/G-R was Kenny Day who finished in seventh place ran he ran a time of 18:35.

“I knew that [Marion] was good just off the bat,” Day said. “I kind of thought if I can stick with some of them then I’ll have a good race.

“At the start, I started off really fast. I really like to because it gets me into a good position to keep up. People started catching me but I really wanted to push myself to stay with them. I often like to do that where I start out fast and stay with people who try to pass me. Once we got to some hills, there were some really steep hills, I was too far away from people in front of me and from people behind me so I was kind of on my own. I still had some people that were staggering in front of me that I was trying to catch the whole time.”

Coming into the race, Day had been battling a foot injury which is why Anderson was even more pleased over his runner’s performance.

“Kenny is battling a foot injury,” Anderson said. “It was good to see him come out and push through that hopefully that’s just a sign that he is healing and recovering and he is getting better. Overall I thought our top-four guys are really solid right now.”

Sam Schildroth and Paul Brockett ran 18:55 and 19:17 to finish in 10th and 11th place, respectively. Soren Cleveland ran 19:45 to finish in 16th place and rounding out the top-five was Ethan Sadler, who finished in 25th place with a time of 20:47.

East Marshall finished in third place with Joseph Terrones leading the Mustangs with a 17th place finish where he ran a time of 19:48.

A shorthanded South Tama finished in fourth place that led by Garrett Arp. Arp led his team with a 14th-place finish with a time of 19:29.

“We are missing one of our top five guys,” South Tama coach Robert Tyynismaa. “He is trying to wrap up drivers ed. One of our other guys was battling an injury from last week so we didn’t run him in practice very hard so his conditioning was off. His run time today wasn’t where it has been. When our top-five guys are running we’ll finish probably in the top-five.”

West Marshall’s Nicolas Thompson led the Trojans in their fifth-place finish. Thompson finished in ninth place with a time of 18:50.

BCLUW finished in sixth place Henry Kaisand running a 19:20 to finish in 12th place, respectively.
