Jaguars give Bobcats a jolt

The fifth-ranked Jaguars handed the 10th-ranked Bobcats their first loss, 42-7.

The Marshalltown football team had a struggling Friday night with No. 5 Ankeny Centennial defeating the Bobcats 42-7 in the Class 4A District 2 opener.

“We came out slow,” head coach Adam Goodvin said. “Very slow. We told [the team] that we have to come out fast and stay fast. From the get-go we kind of got punched in the mouth and didn’t respond well. I think our kids played tough but we have got to execute a lot better.”

Centennial’s offense quickly controlled momentum as the Jaguars broke out a 74-yard touchdown run on their third offensive play of the game.

The No. 10 Bobcats (4-1, 0-1) stopped Centennial on back-to-back drives on a fourth-and-1 and by forcing an interception. However, Centennial (4-1, 1-0) took advantage of Marshalltown’s lackluster offense, which did not convert a first down in the first half, by putting the Bobcat defense in several short-field situations.

After scoring on a 38-yard touchdown run, the Jaguars converted on a short field with a 17-yard touchdown pass and then took advantage of a fumble from Kabba Pins, closing the first half with a 28-0 lead.

Centennial quickly scored again on a 10-yard touchdown run after halftime and tallied a late touchdown in the third quarter to take a 42-0 lead.

Marshalltown’s only success came midway through the fourth quarter. Malik Haynes broke out on runs of 14 and 20 yards that helped set up quarterback Brendan Bates’ 28-yard touchdown pass to Will Van Buren. The Bobcats’ three first downs all came in that one drive.

“Our game plan was to come out and hopefully stop the run and we obviously didn’t do that as well as we had hoped,” Goodvin said. “We were trying to make them run the ball because they don’t do that a whole lot. They did and had some success. We missed some tackles and didn’t execute and didn’t make plays.”

At the end of night, Marshalltown was to held to 75 yards of total offense on 32 offensive plays while Centennial ran 52 plays for 502 yards of total offense.

“It was a little bit of everything [that went wrong],” Goodvin said. “[Ankeny Centennial] is a top-5 team in the state for a reason and I think the kids found that out. The only way to go from here is up and they know that. We are going to get better and get back after it next week.”

Haynes was Marshalltown’s lead rusher with three carries for 35 yards while Pins, who had 166 yards last week, was held to 10 carries for minus-2 yards. Bates finished 6-for-10 and threw for 45 yards and a touchdown pass.

“We didn’t have all 11 guys executing at the same time and that’s what you need in this game,” Goodvin said. “I think whether it was offensively a mixed block or running back was hitting the holes right or vice versa we have got to put it all together and they know that. The only thing to do now is learn from the film and keep getting better.”

Marshalltown will go on the road next Friday and play winless Sioux City West, which lost to Des Moines Roosevelt 93-0.
