MASON CITY — Matheus Pereira’s team-leading seventh goal of the season proved to be the game-winner as the No. 13 Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team trampled NIACC, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Pereira gave the Tigers (6-1, 1-0) a 3-0 lead with his tally in the 13th minute of the match on an assist from Sekou Kromah, and MCC eventually led 4-1 at the half. Kazuki Kimura, Jiroh Hatano and Seiya Zen also recorded first-half goals for the Tigers.

Kenlove Solon got his second of the season to open the second half, and Hatano got his second of the game to make it 6-1 Marshalltown in the 59th minute.

NIACC (3-1, 0-1) rallied to score its season-best second goal of the game in the 73rd minute, but it wasn’t enough to catch MCC. The Trojans allowed more goals to Marshalltown than they had allowed in their previous three games this season (four).

Tiger goalkeeper Matteo Crescente made two saves on four shots on goal to get his fifth win of the fall. Hatano led the offense with two goals and one assist on the day.

Zen added an assist to his goal, while Kromah and Augusto Cunha both had two assists in the Tigers’ third-straight game of scoring at least six goals.

The Tigers go back out on the road on Saturday, facing Iowa Lakes Community College in a 3 p.m. match in Spencer.
