PREP FOOTBALL: Rebels handle Warriors in district play
GLADBROOK — Keagan Giesking scored five first-half touchdowns and the Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team opened 8-Man District 5 play with a 52-20 victory over Meskwaki.
Giesking had first-half touchdown runs of 5, 13, 27, 2 and 6 yards while finishing the game with 14 carries for 101 yards. Eli Thede added a 21-yard TD dash as the Rebels led 44-6 at the half.
Drake Blakesley added a 15-yard TD run for G-R (1-2, 1-0), while Thede finished with 84 yards rushing. Cullen Eiffler completed 11-of-15 passes for 112 yards, finding Thede six times for 45 yards and Aidan Wyatt twice for 38 yards.
Meskwaki quarterback Stanford Kapayou went 13-for-27 for 202 yards passing with two TDs and two interceptions — both by Wyatt. Larnell Velazquez led the way with seven catches for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Donovan Slick-Driscoll added a 1-yard scoring run for the Warriors (1-2, 0-1) in the fourth quarter.
West Marshall 26, Denver 20
STATE CENTER — Ben Kielman’s recovery of Brian Morrison’s blocked punt provided the game-winning touchdown as West Marshall held off Denver 26-20 on Friday.
It was one of two defensive touchdowns for the Trojans (2-1), as Kaden Davis recovered a fumble for a score on the final play of the first half.
Peyton Pope had a touchdown run and a TD pass to Brayden Evertsen for West Marshall.
Waterloo Columbus 48, East Marshall 0
LE GRAND — The East Marshall football team was shut out for the first time since Week 6 of 2018, falling 48-0 to 2A No. 6 Waterloo Columbus.
The Sailors (3-0) led 34-0 at the half.
Samuel Bandstra led the Mustangs (1-2) with 83 rushing yards and 8.5 tackles. Eric Ommen added 26 rushing yards and Logan Bowie had 20 yards on the ground and 18 in the air on a pass to Austin Elliott.
