PREP FOOTBALL: Rebels splatter Saints in road win

MELCHER-DALLAS — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team held Melcher-Dallas to just 35 yards of total offense in an 88-0 blowout of the host Saints in Friday’s 8-Man District 5 contest.

The Rebels (2-2, 2-0) ran out to a 36-0 lead after the first quarter and coasted from there. Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored touchdowns on 10 of its 26 offensive plays, the Rebel defense recorded a safety and Eli Thede returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns.

Keagan Giesking led G-R with eight carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns as well as a 33-yard touchdown pass to Cullen Eiffler on his only throw. Both Rebel pass completions went for scores, as Tom Smith hooked up with Rylan Van Daele for a 16-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Eiffler, Smith, Thede, Will Kiburis and Ethan Gienger each contributed a touchdown run as Gladbrook-Reinbeck had 23 rushes for 286 yards — an average of 12.4 yards per carry. Thede took a kickoff back 64 yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 45 yards for another score, both in the second half.

Melcher-Dallas (1-3, 0-2) turned the ball over three times and got outgained 335-35, getting just three first downs on the night. Quarterback Steven Krpan completed just 3-of-12 attempts for 13 yards with two interceptions.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck visits Baxter next Friday night in district action.

BGM 21, East Marshall 13

BROOKLYN — East Marshall led 13-0 after the first quarter but Class A No. 7 BGM scored 21 unanswered points for a non-district football victory here Friday night.

East Marshall (1-3) went in front on a 2-yard touchdown run by Samuel Bandstra, and Ethan Espenscheid made it 13-0 with his 21-yard interception return for a score.

But BGM (4-0) rallied from there, scoring once in each of the three remaining quarters to get the win.

Bandstra finished with 12 carries for 35 yards to lead East Marshall, and Eric Ommen added six runs for 31 yards. Espenscheid was 3-for-3 passing for 28 yards while Logan Bowie was 1-for-4 for 9 yards with an interception in limited action because of an injury. Dane Thompson was the top receiver with one grab for 19 yards.

Bandstra led the Mustang defense with 13 solo tackles and two assists, while Carson Burchland had eight solo stops and four assists. Espenscheid picked off two passes and East Marshall recovered two fumbles as well.

The Mustangs host Iowa City Regina next Friday night in the Class 1A District 6 opener.
