SPORTS SHORTS: Hermanson leads MHS at Heartland

PELLA — The Marshalltown boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Heartland Cross Country Classic on Saturday at Host Central College.

In the girls’ race, the Bobcats finished 24th out of 25 teams

Phoebe Hermanson led the girls’ team with a 20th place finish where she ran a time of 19:52.

Kaci Uhde ran 23:34 to finish in 167th place and Aida Almanza ran 23:57 to finish in 175th place. Rounding out the top-5 for the Bobcats were Odaly Flores, who ran 24:11, and Rachel Smith, who ran 24:28 to finish in 181st and 188th place, respectively.

The Marshalltown boys finished in 26th place out of 27 teams.

Conner Smith led the boys’ team with an 88th place finish with a time of 17:49. Noah Hermanson finished in 192nd place with a time of 20:20 while Jason Strand ran 20:30 to finish in 194th place. Nicholas Price ran 21:04 to finish in 197th place and Anthoneih Kopsa finished in 202nd place with a time of 21:31.

Next Marshalltown will compete at the Wartburg College Invite on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Mustangs second at Comet Invite

UNION — The East Marshall boys’ and girls’ teams led the way for area teams with a pair of runner-ups at the Comet Invitational on Saturday at the South Hardin Recreation Area.

In the girls’ race, East Marshall was just three points shy of winning the meet with AGWSR winning the meet with a score of 49 points in the five-team race.

Ellie Hull led East Marshall with a sixth-place finish where she ran a time of 22:34. Finishing in the top-10 with Hull, was Mkenzie Robinson who ran a 24:13 to finish in 11th place. Rounding out the top-5 was Wendy Liera who ran 24:23, Addie Lane who ran 24:41 and Carli Gould who ran 25:11 to finish in 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

South Tama, which finished in third place, had three top-10 finalists. Callie Frakes finished in second place with a time of 21:51. Alyssa Chyma ran 22:32 to finish in fourth place while JoJo Tyynismaa ran 24:05 to finish in 10th place.

West Marshall finished in fourth place and was led by Emma Hauser who finished in seventh place with a time of 22:36 while Peyton Smith ran 24:24 to finish in 12th place, respectively.

BCLUW and GMG each did not have a complete team. However, GMG had Angel Schewe finish in ninth place with a time of 23:24 while the Comets were led by Emma Hoover who finished in 23rd place with a time of 26:11.

In the boys’ race, East Marshall also came away as runner-up with a team score of 84 points out of eight teams.

Leading East Marshall was Joseph Terrones who ran 19:08 to finish in 11th place while Kordell Negrete finished in 16th place with a time of 19:49. Korbin Seth ran 20:20 to finish in 17th place. Rounding the Mustangs’ top-5 was Patrick Rayburn who ran 20:22 and Holden Lane who ran 20:39 to finish in 18th and 22nd place, respectively.

Host team, BCLUW finished in third place with a team score of 95 points. Ruben Montoya ran 18:31 to claim second place.

South Tama finished in fourth place and was led by Garrett Arp who finished in seventh place and Jair Sosa who finished in eighth place with both running times of 19:03.

West Marshall, which finished in fifth place, was led by Nicolas Thompson who ran 18:37 to finish in third place.

GMG finished in seventh place and was led by Cameron Spurlin who ran 20:28 to finish in 19th place, respectively.

Tiger volleyball team splits at NIACC

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team played NIACC on Friday and then had a pair of games on Saturday against Southwestern CC and Grand View JV.

MCC defeated North Iowa 3-1 winning 25-20, 18-25, 25-14, 25-15 on Friday night.

On Saturday, the Tigers lost to Grand View JV 3-2, but swept Southwestern CC 25-15, 26-24, 25-18.

The Tigers will host Indian Hills CC on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

North Tama football stays undefeated

HUDSON — The Class A No. 4 North Tama football team stayed undefeated on Friday night with a 61-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left against Hudson.

Quarterback Skyler Staker connected with wide receiver Tayte Payne to score the go-ahead touchdown and seal the Redhawks’ 8-6 win.

North Tama (4-0, 2-0 District 7) trailed Hudson in the first half after giving up a touchdown in the first quarter for a 6-0 deficit.

The Redahwks forced a safety against Hudson (1-3, 1-1) in the third quarter to cut the lead 6-2 before getting the game-winning play in the closing moments.

Staker finished 6-for-15 with 93 passing yards and a touchdown. Payne finished the night with three catches for 76 yards and the touchdown. Noah Weber led North Tama in rushing yards with six carries for 25 yards.

Luke Pennell led the Redhawks defensively with 10 total tackles, nine solo, and one tackle for loss. Both Staker and Payne each came up with an interception.

North Tama will return home next Friday and face East Buchanan.

Meskwaki gets back to .500

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT — Meskwaki Settlement earned its first conference with a 20-18 win over Twin Cedars on Friday.

The Warriors ran for a total of 203 yards in the win. Taurice Grant led the team with 87 yards while Donovan Slick-Driscoll ran for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Grant also led the team in receiving with five catches going for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Stanford Kapayou was 9-for-27 throwing for 152 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Defensively, Evan Nelson had three interceptions while Slick Driscoll had one. Jared Davenport led the Warriors with 9.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack that led to a scoop-and-score touchdown.

Next Friday, the Warriors will go on the road to face AGWSR.
