SPORTS SHORTS: Trojan volleyball gets 2 wins at Nevada

NEVADA — The West Marshall volleyball team endured a long day at the Nevada Tournament but emerged 2-3 with a pair of three-set victories.

The Trojans (5-17) suffered three losses in the tournament to teams that either are or were ranked, starting in pool play with a 21-18, 23-21 defeat to Class 4A No. 12 Glenwood. West Marshall bounced back to down Carlisle, 21-16, 20-22, 15-12, before falling in straight sets to a Norwalk team that fell out the 4A rankings this week, 21-11, 21-12.

The Trojans bounced back in the first round of the consolation bracket by beating Ballard, 25-21, 13-25, 15-9, before bowing out against 2A No. 15 Lake Mills, 25-17, 25-19.

For the tournament, Attiyah Lazard led West Marshall with 18 kills and eight blocks. She also chalked up five service aces in limited opportunities. Hana Hohnstein racked up 15 kills, three blocks, 27 digs and 48 assists while serving 42-for-46 with seven aces.

Peyton Halverson piled up 11 kills, 15 digs and two aces, and Teresa Disney had 10 kills, four blocks and four aces but missed bracketed play because of a band performance. Mary Wilkey pitched in with nine kills and three blocks.

Morgan Cripps paced the defense with 41 digs for the day, while Avery Randall had 19 digs and was 25-for-26 serving with three aces. Grace de Neui tallied 24 assists, 10 digs and was 32-for-35 serving with seven aces.

It’s another busy week on tap for the Trojans, who have NICL West Division matches Tuesday at AGWSR and Thursday at home against East Marshall. West Marshall visits the Madrid Tournament next weekend.

Comets bow out in bracketed play

DUNKERTON — The BCLUW volleyball team went 3-1 in the Dunkerton tournament on Saturday. The Class 1A No. 13 Comets swept their first three games.

BCLUW started the day with a win 21-12, 21-9 win over Riceville and then followed with a 21-14, 21-19 win against Turkey Valley. The Comets last win of the day came against West Central in a 21-13, 21-19 win.

However, BCLUW ended the day with a 25-17, 25-10 loss against Clear Creek-Amana.

Madison Ubben’s 28 kills and 16 digs led the Comets in both categories while Jade Hammers totaled 19 kills. Allison Engle led the team with 55 assists.

The Comets return to action on Monday in a triangular, joining PCM at Roland-Story High School.

Mustangs pick up a win at South Tama

TAMA — The East Marshall volleyball team went 1-3 in the South Tama volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs (3-18) were swept in its first game against Belle Plaine losing 21-7, 21-12. East Marshall followed with a three-set loss to South Tama losing 22-20, 19-21, 9-15.

East Marshall lone win came against Perry. The Mustangs swept Perry 21-13, 21-13.

East Marshall closed the day with a 21-15, 18-21, 12-15 loss to BGM.

Clare Veren led the team with 13 kills. Noelia Aguilera’s 22 assists led the Mustangs while Zoeie Fontanini totaled 41 digs.

The Mustangs return to action on the road against West Marshall on Thursday.

No. 3 Redhawks outlast East Buchanan

TRAER — The Class A No. 3 North Tama football team stayed undefeated after beating East Buchanan 27-6 on Friday night.

Leading the Redhawks (5-0) was Noah Weber’s four rushing touchdowns. Weber lead North Tama with 104 rushing yards that came off 20 carries.

Quarterback Skyler Staker finished 6-for-13 throwing for 107 yards. Luke Pennell led the team in receiving with two catches and 45 yards.

Defensively, Pennell also had an interception to go with 5.5 total tackles. Both Zach Greiner and Staker each led the team with seven total tackles.

Staker was ejected late in the game, which will make him unavailable for next week’s showdown at No. 5 Grundy Center.

West Marshall gridders shut out Norse

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall football shutout Roland-Story in a 31-0 win on Friday night.

Quarterback Caleb Keigan was 7-for-11 throwing for 68 while quarterback Peyton Pope was 4-for-7 throwing 48 yards and a touchdown pass.

Pope also ran 102 rushing yards which led the Trojans in rushing yards. Preston Pope ran for a touchdown and 56 yards on nine carries while Jarrin Goecke ran for 79 yards and a touchdown off nine carries.

Brayden Evertsen led the team in receiving in which he hauled in five catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Ben Kielman totaled 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and had a scoop and score touchdown.

Gabe Jones, who had three total tackles, had a fumble recovery and Seth Larson, who had 2.5 total tackles, also had a fumble recovery while Jack Larsen had one interception.

Peyton made a 35-yard field goal and also recorded three point-after kicks.

North Tama sweeps aside Colo-NESCO

COLO — The North Tama volleyball team swept Colo-NESCO on Thursday night.

The Class 1A No. 4 Redhawks (17-3, 4-0) won 25-11, 25-17, 25-16.

Shae Ewoldt led the team with seven kills. Isabel Sierra, Grace Thorsen and Carlie Gorder each posted six kills. Takoa Kopriva led the Redhawks with 16 digs while Sierra tallied 23 assists.

Rebels take down AGWSR in division

ACKLEY — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team defeated AGWSR 3-1 and extended their win streak six in a row on Thursday night.

The Rebels won 25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20.

Saari Kuehl racked up 25 kills to go with 10 digs with Ava Wyatt posting 14 kills. Alyssa Morgan led the team 14 digs while Emma McClintock totaled 38 assists.
