SPORTS SHORTS: Comets cruise through opening round

CONRAD — The BCLUW volleyball team swept Colo-NESCO in the opening round of the Class 1A Region 4 tournament on Tuesday.

The No. 13 Comets (21-14) won 25-10, 25-5, 25-17.

Lizzie Garber and Jade Hammers each led the team with eight kills. Kennedy Williams had a team leading six digs and Allison Engle posted 17 assists. The team totaled 18 aces with Garber leading the team with nine.

BCLUW will advance to the second round of the regional tournament and host Baxter on Monday.

Mustangs bounced from regional play

LE GRAND — The East Marshall volleyball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday after losing to Colfax-Mingo in the first round of the Class 2A Region 4 tournament, falling 25-16, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17.

East Marshall (4-26) was led by Clare Veren, who had eight kills. Rylee Freese had a team-leading 20 digs to go with four kills and 14-of-15 serving with six aces, while Zoeie Fontanini, J.J. Westendorf and Noelia Aguilera each had 12 digs. Aguilera totaled eight assists and Faith Bandstra had six more.

“The girls didn’t say ‘die,’ they were so in the huddle listening and eager to go out and do what they needed to do,” said East Marshall head coach Terri Westendorf. “That was awesome, that takes some character.”
