SPORTS SHORTS: GC/G-R boys pace locals at D-NH meet

DIKE — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ cross country team led area squads in the Wolverine Invite on Tuesday with a second-place finish.

GC/G-R was led by Kenny Day, who ran 17:10 to finish in fourth place. Sam Schildroth ran 17:43 to place 17th, while Paul Brockett ran 18:05 to finish in 28th. Rounding out the Spartans’ scoring was Soren Cleveland in 18:07 and Ethan Sadler in 18:19 as they finished 28th and 35th place, respectively.

East Marshall finished in seventh place with a team score of 222 points that was led by Joseph Terrones, who finished in 22nd place with a time of 17:51.

BCLUW took eighth place with a score of 282 points. Ruben Montoya clocked in at 17:15 for sixth.

West Marshall took 11th place with a score of 305 points. Nicolas Thompson finished ninth in 17:17.

North Tama was led by Sam Snyder, who finished in 34th place with a time of 18:16.

In the girls’ race, East Marshall finished in 12th place to lead area teams.

Ellie Hull led the Mustangs with an 18th-place finish and a time of 20:42. Wendy Liera ran 22:36 and Mkenzie Robinson ran 22:37 to finish in 68th and 69th place, respectively.

West Marshall finished in 13th place led by Emelia Hauser, who timed in at 21:33 to finish 44th.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck finished 14th with Taylor Stahl leading the team with a seventh-place finish and a time of 19:43.

Meskwaki Settlement was led by Shye Johnson, who ran 21:32 to place 43rd. BCLUW was led by Emma Hoover, who finished 103rd in 24 minutes.

GMG netters swept aside by Baxter

GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team was swept by Baxter on Tuesday in the Iowa Star Conference South Division matchup.

GMG (1-18, 1-4) lost 25-17, 25-10, 25-15.

Jenna Yilek led the Wolverines with five kills. Bailey Anderson posted a team-leading eight digs, and Jordan Yilek had a team-high 10 assists.

No. 4 North Tama tramples Tripoli

TAMA — The Class 1A No. 4 North Tama volleyball team swept No. 10 Tripoli on Tuesday. The Redhawks won 25-9, 25-22, 25-16.

Katie Kopriva had a team-leading 17 kills and Takoa Kopriva had 23 digs for the Redhawks (18-3). Isabel Sierra totaled 27 assists while the team totaled eight aces.

Rebels rally past Jesup in NICL action

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 15 Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team collected a comeback win against Jesup in a cross-NICL clash on Tuesday.

The Rebels (19-6) won 24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-10.

Saari Kuehl had 23 kills to go with her 13 digs, while Alyssa Morgan totaled 30 digs on the night for the Rebels. Emma McClintock posted 42 assists in the win.

South Tama nets first WaMaC West win

VINTON — The South Tama volleyball team defeated Vinton-Shellsburg in a WaMaC West Division match on Tuesday. The Trojans (7-25, 1-5) won 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Grace Vest had a team-leading 18 kills to go with her 12 digs. Kortney Babinat added 13 kills, Clarissa Rosenberger totaled 17 digs and Laurel Upah tallied 31 assists. The Trojans also had 12 total aces in the win, led by Upah’s five.

South Tama plays in the Don Bosco Tournament on Saturday in Gilbertville.
