SPORTS SHORTS: Local runners compete in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE — The Marshalltown and East Marshall cross country teams competed in the Knoxville Invatational on Monday.

The Marshalltown boys’ team finished in eighth place with a team score of 198 points while East Marshall finished in 11th place with a total score of 296 points.

Leading Marshalltown was Conner Smith, who ran 18:01 to finish in third place.

Ethan Benscoter finished in 33rd place with a time of 19:46 while Jason Strand finished in 41st place with a time of 20:00. Rounding out the top-5 was Freddy Ross who ran 21:06 to finish in 89th place and Anthoneih Kopsa ran 22:30 to finish 137th.

East Marshall was led by Korbin Seth, who ran 19:57 to finish in 38th place. Patrick Rayburn ran 20:14 to finish in 56th and Hunter Hughlette was 66th in 20:26.

Rounding out the Mustangs’ top-5 was Jordan Swift who ran 21:18 and Kordell Negrete ran 21:42 to finish in 96th and 105th place, respectively.

The East Marshall girls’ cross country team finished in 10th place in the meet. Ellie Hull led the team with a time of 22:41 and finished in 21st place. Addie Lan ran 24:41 to finish 60th place while Wendy Liera ran 25:18 to finish in 75th place respectively.

STC netters swept by Independence

INDEPENDENCE — The South Tama volleyball team was swept by Independence in a WaMaC West Division match on Tuesday night.

The Trojans (5-20, 0-7) dropped the match 25-15, 25-16, 25-14.

Kortney Babinat led the team with seven kills while Morgan Woosley had six kills and a team-leading four digs. Laurel Upah and Gwen Upah each posted eight assists with Laurel adding two aces and a dig.
