SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawks fall to Janesville in ISC finals

CLARKSVILLE — The North Tama, Meskwaki Settlement and GMG volleyball teams competed in the Iowa Star Conference tournament on Saturday.

Class 1A No. 4 North Tama opened with a 21-8, 21-13 win over Don Bosco. However, the Redhawks were swept 21-11, 21-19 by No. 3 Janesville in the championship round.

GMG had a 21-11, 16-21, 15-10 loss to Riceville and a 21-7, 21-12 loss to Dunkerton. However, GMG came away with a 21-18, 19-21, 15-5 win over Clarksville.

Jenna Yilek led the Wolverines with nine kills. Emily Vaughn totaled 30 digs, Moriah Groth had 25 digs, while Jordan Yilek posted 21 assists.

Meskwaki Settlement lost to Waterloo Christian, 21-15, 21-9, and lost to Colo-NESCO, 21-18, 21-17.

GMG will open the regional tournament at Collins-Maxwell tonight, and the winner will advance to face North Tama on Oct. 28 in Traer.

Meskwaki travels to face No. 11 Gladbrook-Reinbeck in tonight’s regional opener.

BCLUW beats GMG in district football

CONRAD — The BCLUW football team earned its first win of the season after defeating GMG 7-0 in Friday’s Class A District 7 matchup.

Joe Mason scored the Comets’ lone touchdown while rushing for 172 yards in the game. Quarterback Kade Pekarek was 3-for-12 passing for 51 yards with two interceptions. Defensively, Noah Lehman led BCLUW with 5.5 tackles.

BCLUW (1-7, 1-4) will go on the road this Friday to play Class A No. 3 North Tama. GMG (0-8, 0-6) hosts Starmont in a non-district finale.
