SPORTS SHORTS: Seniors power Trojans past Mustangs

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall volleyball team leaned on its seniors on Senior Night and the Trojans took a three-set sweep from East Marshall in Thursday’s NICL West Division contest, winning 25-10, 25-14, 25-22.

Renae Schaper led West Marshall (7-17, 2-3) with eight kills to go with two service aces, one block as well as three assists in a cameo at setter. Teresa Disney added seven kills and two blocks, Payton Halverson had four kills, four aces and six digs, and Morgan Cripps finished with three kills, three aces and seven digs.

Hana Hohnstein totaled team-highs of 12 digs and assists to go with her three aces and two kills, while Grace de Neui added six assists, one block and one dig.

Reilly Jensen contributed four assists and fellow sophomore Attiyah Lazard added three kills and one block.

East Marshall (3-19, 0-4) was paced by Rylee Freese with five kills, 10 digs and 9-of-9 serving. Noelia Aguilera added eight digs, five assists and 10-of-10 serving with two aces. J.J. Westerndorf served 9-for-10 as well.

Camy Weeks contributed eight digs, Jayleigh Pansegrau had five digs and two kills, and Kennedy Wheater chipped in two kills. Faith Bandstra pitched in with five assists, and Clare Veren had one kill and one block.

East Marshall has the weekend off before Monday’s match at South Hardin, while West Marshall travels on Saturday to the Madrid Tournament.

Spartan harriers compete in Jesup

JESUP — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the Jesup Invite on Thursday night.

The boys team finished in eighth place out of 17 teams.

Sam Schildroth led the team with a ninth-place finish with a time of 17:34.

Soren Cleveland finished in 36th place and Paul Brockett finished in 38th place with two running times of 18:19 and 18:23.

Rounding out the top-five was Ethan Sadler who ran 18:58 and Brennen Sager who ran 19:16 to finish in 51st and 61st place, respectively.

Jeryn Spear ran 19:53 to finish in 75th place and Brandon Strohbehn ran 19:54 to finish in 76th place.

The girls’ team finished in 11th place out of 16 teams.

Taylor Stahl led GC/G-R with a 12th place finish in which she ran a time of 20:28.

Bella Dole finished in 65th place and Paiton Wallis finished in 68th place with the two running times of 23:09 and 23:26.

Emma Beck ran a time of 24:42 and finished in 86th place with Lauren Wegmann finishing in 101st place with a time of 26:38.

Whitney Laube ran 26:40 to finish in 102nd place and Jessica Saak finish in 110th place with a time of 28:39.

Comet boys top field at Colo-NESCO

ZEARING — The BCLUW boys’ cross country team came away with a first-place team finish out of four teams in the Colo-NESCO Invite on Thursday.

Ruben Montoya won the race with a time of 18:19 while teammate Henry Kaisand ran 18:54 to finish in second place.

Trey Teske took fourth place with a time of 6:49 and Alex Crompton finished in 10th place with a time of 20:19. Rounding out the Comets’ top-5 was Carter Kemp who ran 20:55 to finish in 15th place.

GMG finished in fourth place while having a top-10 finisher. Cameron Spurlin finished in eighth place with a time of 19:46.

North Tama had an incomplete but had a pair of top-10 finishers. Sam Snyder ran 19:02 to finish in third place while Logan Kennedy ran 20:03 to finish in ninth place.

Meskwaki Settlement also did not field a complete but was led by Davyin Guevera who finished in 16th place with a time of 21:01.

The North Tama girls took second place out of four teams.

Jules Breakenridge led the Redhawks with a second-place finish with a time of 22:24.

Grace Lidgett ran 23:41 and Olivia Ketter ran 24:06 to finish in third and fourth place, respectively.

Rounding out North Tama’s top-5 was Jordan Rigel who finished in 20th place with a time of 26:55 and Rachel Robinson finished in 28th place with a time of 29:20.

GMG, BCLUW and Meskwaki Settlement did not field complete teams.

Meskwaki Settlement was led by Shye Johnson who finished in fourth place with a time of 22:32.

BCLUW’s Emma Hoover ran 24:16 to finish in seventh place.

GMG was led by Belle Duncan who finished in eighth place with a time of 25:05.

MCC volleyball sweeps away John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. — The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team swept John Wood CC on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (20-7) won the match 29-27, 25-23, 25-18.

MCC will stay on the road and play in the Showdown on the Wabash Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers will face Gadsden State CC, Vincennes University, Wabash Valley College and Snead State CC.

MCC will open against Gadsden State CC at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Wolverines fall in divisional showdown

GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team was swept by Colo-NESCO in an Iowa Star Conference South Division match on Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (1-17, 1-4) lost the match 25-22, 25-22, 25-16.

Jenna Yilek led the team with seven kills while Baily Anderson posted a team leading 12 digs. Jordan Yilken totaled 14 assists.

The loss is the eighth consecutive for GMG.

GMG returns to action on the road against Collins-Maxwell.
