SPORTS SHORTS: STC succumbs to Knoxville in district

KNOXVILLE — The South Tama football team lost its Class 3A District 7 matchup against Knoxville 22-6 on Friday.

South Tama quarterback Brayden Smith finished 7-for-21 passing for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Payton Vest led the ground game with 92 rushing yards on 23 carries and also had two catches for 30 yards. Wide receiver Matt Wiese hauled in four catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Trojans had four takeaways with Aaron Neave leading the defense with a total of 12.5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jesus Wantatee-Romero and Wiese each had an interception while Nate Drummer also had a fumble recovery.

UNI adds two coaches to hoops staff

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben Jacobson recently announced the hiring of Ike Hermer and Marc Sonnen to fill the roles of director of basketball operations and video coordinator.

Hermer joins the Panthers as the director of basketball operations, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the men’s basketball office, including the team’s operating budget, team travel, quality control, NCAA compliance, scheduling and fundraising, among other duties.

Sonnen rejoins the Panthers as the team’s video coordinator. He will film and breakdown practice and game film and assist the coaching staff with scouting reports.
