SPORTS SHORTS: Warriors snap skid by beating Saints

MELCHER-DALLAS — The Meskwaki Settlement football team snapped a three-game losing streak after defeating Melcher-Dallas 80-36 on Friday in the District 5 matchup.

Quarterback Stanford Kapayou was 7-for-15 throwing for 208 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

The Warriors (3-5, 2-4) ran for seven touchdowns and 213 yards. Emmett Roberts ran for 153 yards and four touchdowns off 13 carries while Taurice Grant ran for 60 yards and three touchdowns on four carries.

Grant also hauled in three catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Larnell Velaquez had two catches for 94 yards and a touchdown and Evan Nelson had one catch for 19 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Kapayou had 10.5 tackles, with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Velaquez had two interceptions to go with seven tackles. Nelson had an interception with seven tackles and Grant had an interception with 10 tackles.

Redhawks rough up Postville 47-0

POSTVILLE — The North Tama football team stayed undefeated after shutting out Postville 47-0 in the Class A District 7 action

The Class A No. 3 Redhawks ground game posted 347 rushing yards on the night.

Running back Noah Weber led the team with 182 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Skyler Staker ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns while Gabe Kopriva ran for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Staker led the team with 4.5 tackles and an interception. Weber made 1.5 tackles and also had an interception.

Spartan boys third at NICL invitational

JESUP — Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ cross country team led area teams at the North Iowa Cedar League Invite on Thursday with a third-place finish at the Jesup Golf and Country Club.

The Rebels had three top-10 finishers. Kenny Day ran 17:07 to finish in fourth place, Paul Brockett ran 17:29 to finish in ninth place and Sam Schildroth ran 17:30 to finish in 10th place, respectively.

Rounding out the top-five for GC/G-R was Ethan Sadler who ran 18:06 to finish in 26th place and Brennen Sager finished in 46th place with a time of 19:05.

East Marshall finished in sixth place with Joseph Terrones leading the Mustangs with a 16th place finish and a time of 17:47.

Ruben Montoya led BCLUW in its eighth-place team finish with a time of 17:25 and a seventh-place overall finish.

West Marshall finished in ninth place with Nicolas Thompson leading the team with a time of 17:26 and an eighth-place finish.

In the girls’ race, East Marshall led area teams with a sixth place finish.

Ellie Hull led the Mustangs with an 11th place finish and a time of 20:40. McKenzie Robinson ran 21:48 to finish in 27th place while Wendy Liera ran 22:23 to take 37th place. Rounding out the top-five was Addie Lane who finish in 39th place with a time of 22:31 and Hannah Roads who ran 23:18 to finish in 50th place.

In West Marshall’s eighth-place finish, Emelia Hauser led the team with a time of 21:25 to finish in 19th place.

GC-GR finish in ninth place with Taylor Stahl finishing in seventh place with a time of 20:03 to lead the team.

BCLUW fielded an incomplete team but was led by Emma Hoover who ran 23:56 to finish in 58th place.

Frakes leads STC harries at WaMaC

MANCHESTER — The South Tama boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the WaMaC Conference Meet on Thursday at the Hart Ridge Golf Course.

The South Tama girls’ team finished in 10th place out of 14 teams.

Callie Frakes led the team with a fifth-place finish and a time of 20:00. Alyssa Chyma finished in 23rd place with a time of 20:58 while JoJo Tyynismaa ran 22:27 to finish in 44th place.

Rounding out the top-five was Makayla Backen ran 24:24 to finish in 84th place and Neena Lasley ran 27:09 to finish in 89th place.

The boys’ team also had a team 10th place finish out of 13 teams.

Garrett Arp led the team with a 30th place finish and a time of 17:50.

Tyrin Lasley ran 19:02 and Trusten Rosenberger finish in 57th and 59th place, respectively.

Rounding out the top-five was Mitch Knock who ran 19:26 to finish in 67th place and Clayton Graff who finished in 79th place with a time of 20:20.

Ethan Babinat ran 20:31 to finish in 80th place while Omar Castanon ran 20:38 to finish in 82nd place.

Redhawks, Breakenridge 2nd at ISC

ZEARING — The North Tama girls’ cross country team finished in second place at the Iowa Star Conference Meet on Thursday at Dakins Lake Park.

The Redhawks’ Jules Breakenridge finished in second place with a time of 21:47 while Grace Lidgett ran 22:29 to finish in fourth place. Olivia Ketter finished in 10th place with a time of 23:12.

Rounding out the North Tama top-five was Jordan Rigel who ran 26:51 to finish in 34th place and Rachel Robinson who ran 29:00 to finish in 41st place.

GMG fielded an incomplete team but Angel Shewe ran 24:13 and Olivia Pasquariello ran 24:17 to finish in 17th and 18th place, respectively.

Meskwaki Settlement was led by Shye Johnson who ran 22:31 to finish in fifth place.

In the boys’ race, GMG finished in eighth place out of ten teams.

Cameron Spurlin led GMG with a 10th place finish and a time of 19:32.

Gabe Zieslorf ran 21:18 to finish in 40th place while Noah Teske ran 21:45 to finish in 45th place. Rounding out the top-five was Abe Dieleman who ran 21:53 to finish in 46th place and Nick Collins ran 22:08 to finish in 49th place.

Meskwaki Settlement finished in 10th place. Leading the Warriors was Dayvin Guevera who ran 19:13 to finish in eighth place.

North Tama fielded an incomplete team but was led by Sam Snyder who finished in third place with a time of 18:45.

11th-ranked Rebels sweep aside Bolts

BAXTER — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team swept Baxter on Thursday. The Class 1A No. 11 Rebels won 25-14, 26-24, 25-8.

Saari Kuehl led the team with 12 kills and 16 digs while Emma McClintock totaled 24 assists.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (23-8) will host Meskwaki Settlement in the first round of the regional tournament on Tuesday.

STC netters split in WaMaC tourney

MARION — The South Tama volleyball team went 1-1 in the WaMaC Tournament on Thursday.

South Tama (10-29) opened with a 17-25, 25-17, 15-10 win over Vinton-Shellsburg. The Trojans were then swept in their second match 25-21, 25-13 by Maquoketa.

Gracie Vest had a team-leading 24 kills, Clarissa Rosenberger had 18 digs and Laurel Upah totaled 40 assists.
