COLLEGE WRESTLING: Hawkeyes blank Chattanooga to start

IOWA CITY — The No. 2 Iowa wrestling team opened the season with a shutout, blanking Tennessee-Chattanooga 39-0 on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Five of Iowa’s 10 wins came with bonus points, highlighted by a pin for 12th-ranked heavyweight Tony Cassioppi to cap the dual in a shutout.

Top-ranked Spencer Lee got the Hawkeyes off and running with a 16-5 major decision of Fabian Gutierrez at 125 pounds. Austin DeSanto tallied a technical fall of Aidan Murphy at 141, and No. 2 Kaleb Young scored a major decision over George Carpenter at 157.

Fourth-ranked Michael Kemerer got a technical fall as well at 174, and Cassioppi’s pin put the exclamation point on the opening win.

Iowa goes on the road to Ames next Sunday for the annual Cy-Hawk showdown with Iowa State, starting at 2 p.m.

Cyclones begin mat season with a win

AMES — The No. 12 Iowa State wrestling team won six of 10 matches highlighted by four bonus-point victories in a season-opening 24-15 victory over Bucknell on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State separated itself from the Bison (0-2) with three-straight wins from 141 to 157 pounds. Ian Parker started the run with a decision, Jarrett Degen got a major decision at 149 and David Carr capped the Cyclone streak with a technical fall, 18-3, over Jaden Fisher at 157.

ISU’s Marcus Coleman (174) pinned Frankie Guida to bolster the lead, and Sam Colbray got the Cyclones’ final win by decision at 184.

Iowa State hosts in-state rival Iowa next Sunday at 2 p.m.

Panthers edged out by Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — An injury default in the next-to-last match sealed the Northern Iowa wrestling team’s fate in a 24-20 loss to Northwestern on Sunday.

Fifth-ranked Jacob Holschlag was unable to finish at 197 pounds for the Panthers, who fell behind 24-17 as a result. Carter Isley’s 6-0 decision at heavyweight gave UNI the final win, but not even a pin would have brought UNI back.

The two teams split the 10 matches, but Northwestern (1-1) scored four bonus-point victories to UNI’s three. A major decision by Bryce Steiert at 174 and Taylor Lujan’s pin of Jack Jessen at 184 gave the Panthers a chance at a comeback, but Holschlag was forced to retire in the first period of his bout with Lucas Davison.

Northern Iowa (0-1) hosts fourth-ranked Nebraska next Sunday at 1 p.m. at the West Gym.
