3 Hawkeyes, 1 Cyclone named AP All-American

Keith Duncan, A.J. Epenesa, Tristan Wirfs and Charlie Kolar

Three members of the University of Iowa football team and another from Iowa State have been named to the 2019 Associated Press All-America Teams, the AP announced Monday.

Iowa junior kicker Keith Duncan was named first-team All-American, while junior right tackle Tristan Wirfs and junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa were selected for the second team.

Iowa State sophomore tight end Charlie Kolar was chosen for a spot on the third team.

Duncan, a Lou Groza Award finalist and Walter Camp second-team All-American, set Big Ten Conference and Iowa single-season records with 29 field goals made, a total that ranks sixth-best all-time in NCAA history. Duncan also set a school record with six field-goal attempts in a game and 34 attempts in a season.

Duncan finished the regular season 29-for-34 on field goals and 25-for-25 on point-after kicks. He was named the Big Ten’s Special Teams Player of the Week three times and was named the Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year and a unanimous first-team all-Big Ten selection by the AP.

Wirfs was named the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year in addition to earning first-team all-conference honors from both the coaches and the media. He was a Walter Camp second-team All-American and a unanimous first-team all-Big Ten pick by the AP.

Epenesa was a second-team Walter Camp All-American, too, while also earning first-team all-Big Ten honors from the coaches, media and the AP. He was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice and leads the Hawkeyes in tackles for loss (13), quarterback sacks (9) and forced fumbles (3).

Kolar is the first Cyclone in school history to be named to an All-American team as well as an Academic All-American squad. Kolar was first-team Academic All-America by CoSIDA, announced last week.

Kolar leads all Big 12 Conference tight ends with 48 receptions, 675 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. His 675 yards is a school record for tight ends as well.
