BGM overruns Rebels down the stretch

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team missed out on its first win of the season after falling short against BGM in a 54-49 loss on Monday night.

BGM pulled ahead of the Rebels with a fourth-quarter surge.

“That’s a tough one to lose right there,” G-R head coach Bruce Bailey said. “That’s a team if we would cut down on the mental mistakes [we’d win]. That’s very disappointing for me tonight and I relayed that to the girls in the locker room.”

G-R’s offense started slow and trailed as much as 20-9 in the second quarter but the Rebels managed to find a rhythm and go on a 12-5 run before halftime.

The momentum carried over for G-R out of halftime as the Rebels open the second half with an 8-3 run that allowed the Rebels to go into the fourth quarter with a 37-31 run. G-R outscored BGM 16-6 in the third quarter.

The key adjustment made according to Baily was becoming more aggressive and efficient on the defensive side of the ball.

“We needed to defensively get up a little bit more, be more aggressive on defense, get in the passing lanes instead of letting them make the easy passes,” Bailey said. “Same thing offensively, earlier in the game we were throwing it around like we were playing catch instead of attacking the basket. Once they decided to do that both ends of the floor then things got better for us until we made those mental mistakes and we couldn’t recover from some of them.”

A key for the Rebels was Mahayla Olson, who switched to point guard and scored six of her team-leading 16 points in the third quarter.

“I had to move her to the point and she did a pretty good job,” Bailey said. “She helped in the second half. I thought she played pretty good defense.”

However, BGM flipped the script and forced several Rebel turnovers with a full-court press which led to the Bears to take momentum with a 12-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter. In total, BGM answered back by outscoring G-R 23-12 in the quarter.

“We did have the opportunity [to win in the fourth quarter],” Bailey said. “We are a team that doesn’t shoot particularly well right now so we need to make sure that we take care of the basketball. If we can do that and get more opportunities with the basket we’ll be ok but if we continue to make mental mistakes it is going to be very hard for us to beat teams when we only shoot 21 or 22 percent so we need 15 more shots a game. We have to clean a lot of things up.”

One of the main issues G-R faced in the fourth quarter was foul trouble. Saari Kuehl and Meagan Cooley both fouled out as the two combined for 16 points. At the same time, BGM reached the foul line 10 times in the quarter, shooting 5-for-10.

“It was bad decisions on our part, but the press helped,” Bailey said. “It sped us up a little bit and they never really trapped us. We made bad decisions and went too fast and threw it away. I believe they outscored us 22 or 23 to 12 in the fourth quarter, which is basically from turnovers and some stupid fouls that we shouldn’t have made. They got into the bonus and the double bonus and so things just snowballed on us.

“I just couldn’t get them rested enough is the problem. When you get tired those mental mistakes happen probably more than if you are rested. Our foul trouble was a problem too.”

G-R will travel to East Marshall on Friday.

“I know they know what to do and I know they know how to do it,” Bailey said. “We just have got to become players who can do it when we’re playing somebody on game night that means something. We just have to figure that out as a team. I think that will come but I’m just hoping sooner rather than later.”
