Iowa’s Bohannon opts for surgery

IOWA CITY — Jordan Bohannon knew all too well how painful the injury to his left hip could get.

He just had surgery in May to repair the same damage to his right hip.

Bohannon, the University of Iowa’s senior guard, announced Monday his decision to undergo season-ending hip surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Recovery from this procedure is typically 6-9 months. Bohannon had the same surgery on his right hip in May but returned long enough to play 10 games for the Hawkeye men’s basketball team this winter before hanging up his shoes — literally.

Bohannon skipped Iowa’s fifth game this season against Cal Poly to make it to the Hawkeyes’ game against Iowa State last Thursday in Ames. After Iowa’s dominant 84-68 victory, Bohannon signed his sneakers “To ISU: Thanks for memz :)” and left them at the top of the key in what would be his last game at Hilton Coliseum regardless of a potential medical redshirt.

Now Bohannon will likely pursue that extra year of basketball through a medical hardship waiver with the NCAA.

“It has been an incredibly difficult last 6-to-9 months dealing with what I’ve had to go through,” Bohannon said in a statement from the university. “The unwavering support from Hawkeye nation, teams, coaches, friends and family has meant the world to me. I’m looking forward to finally being 100 percent and will be doing everything I can to help this team out from the sidelines the rest of the season.”

He steps away from a Hawkeye squad that has gone 8-3 through its first 11 games with a win over then-No. 12 Texas Tech as a highlight. In 10 games, Bohannon averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists per game.

“I could not have more respect for Jordan and the way in which he has fought to get back on the court for this team,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “Ultimately I want what is best for Jordan, knowing that he will work even harder following Thursday’s procedure.”
