PREP WRESTLING: Bobcats fight for 4th at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — The Marshalltown wrestling team opened the day with back-to-back wins at the Williamsburg Duals but lost its next three rounds to finish in fourth place on Saturday.

The Bobcats defeated Van Meter/Earlham 47-18 in the first round of pool play and handled Mediapolis 51-21 in round two, but Class 2A No. 10 Williamsburg ousted Marshalltown 49-18 in the last round.

MHS moved into the championship bracket but fell 55-21 to Davenport Assumption and 39-30 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont to settle for fourth place in the eight-team tournament. Host Williamsburg defeated Davenport Assumption 39-29 for the team title.

Two Bobcat wrestlers went undefeated on the day, as Saul Pantoja at 126 pounds and 10th-ranked heavyweight Jordan Anderson both finished 5-0. Pantoja posted two pins, a major decision and two minor decisions, while Anderson won twice by fall, twice by forfeit and once by decision.

Javier Rodriguez (113) and Zach Bitker (145) both went 4-1 with one pin apiece, while Bennett Hageman (138), Coltin Grimm (182) and Carson Williams (220) each finished 3-2.

Williams traveled the road with the most resistance, running into three ranked opponents in the 220-pound weight class. Williams scored a 6-3 decision over Williamsburg’s sixth-ranked (2A) Billy Grout. He lost 6-4 in double-overtime to 1A No. 7 Keegan Akers of Mediapolis and by fall to E-B-F’s top-ranked Sage Walker.

Anderson notched two wins over ranked opponents, starting with a 4-2 decision over No. 5 Derrin Sesker of Van Meter/Earlham. He added a third-period pin of Williamsburg’s No. 4 Cole Cremeens.

Hageman’s highlight win was an 11-5 decision over E-B-F’s seventh-ranked Tayton Ricard.

The Bobcats are back in action Thursday with a trip to Urbandale for a CIML dual meet.

EM/GMG wins at ‘Zuma

MONTEZUMA — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team ran into little resistance in winning the Montezuma Invitational on Saturday, crowning six champions along the way.

The Mustangs racked 219 team points to distance themselves from Pella (188), the Waukee junior varsity (157) and Pleasantville (138) at the top of the nine-team tournament. East Marshall/GMG had eight finalists in all while adding three third-place finishers to the mix.

Five of EM/GMG’s six champions piled up two pins on their way to the top of their respective podiums, while eighth-ranked Dom Ridout needed to pin just one opponent to emerge from the top of the 120-pound field. He decked Pella’s Peyton Ritzert in 1 minute, 12 seconds, in his only match of the day.

Dane Thompson (132 pounds), Carson Burchland (138), Garrett Kerber (152), Samuel Bandstra (160) and Conner Murty (195) each finished 2-0 with two pins to win their respective brackets.

Kordell Negrete (126) and Tayte Nauman (182) both placed second for the Mustangs, while Brodie Augspurger (106) and Tim Benson (145) were both third in their respective brackets.

East Marshall/GMG gets back into North Iowa Cedar League wrestling on Thursday when it visits Sumner-Fredericksburg for a triangular including Jesup.

Trojans 11th at DC-G

GRIMES — The West Marshall wrestling team had six placewinning performances on its way to an 11th-place team finish at the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invitational on Saturday.

Grant Nason notched the best result for the Trojans, taking second place at 152 pounds. He worked his way into the finals with a pin and a pair of minor decisions before falling by major decision, 17-5, to Ben Monroe of Ankeny Centennial.

Ben Kielman picked up third place at 170 for West Marshall, suffering his first loss of the season in the semifinals to Class 3A No. 8 Garrett Morris of Dallas Center-Grimes. Kielman bounced back from the first-period pin to take down Oskaloosa’s Blake Westercamp in the third-place match, pinning him in 2:53.

J.D. Downs got the Trojans’ only fourth-place result at 106, while Caden Vellinga (113) and Kameron Malloy (182) both earned fifth place. Jake Vawter (132) scored points for sixth place.

Centennial, ranked ninth in 3A, won the invitational with 256 team points, while host Dallas Center-Grimes was second (198) and Creston/Orient-Macksburg (158) was third in the 14-team tournament.
