SPORTS SHORTS: GMG girls get season’s first triumph

GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team got its first win of the season, leading from start to finish in a 40-34 victory over Cedar Valley Christian on Monday.

Emily Vaughn and Jordan Yilek scored nine points apiece to lead the Wolverines (1-5), and Jenna Yilek added eight points in the win. Colby Miller and Belle Duncan both chipped in with five points.

GMG led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter before Cedar Valley Christian (0-6) tried to make a comeback.

Janessa Betsworth led CVC with 12 points, Abby Scroggs scored 10 points and Abby Pospisil finished with nine.

GMG entertains North Tama tonight in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

ISU’s Joens wins ESPNW national honor

AMES — Iowa State sophomore Ashley Joens was named the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and ESPNW National Player of the Week after averaging 33.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games.

Joens’ Big 12 Player of the Week honor is her second of the season, while her national recognition is the first of her career and the first by any Cyclone player in program history.

Joens started the week with 26 points and 12 rebounds against Iowa. On Sunday, Joens dominated Wright State, scoring 41 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Her 41 points ranks second in school history.

Joens leads the nation in free-throw attempts (86) and makes (77). Joens also ranks second in the nation in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game.

UNI’s Green takes MVC weekly award

ST. LOUIS — Northern Iowa’s AJ Green has been named the MVC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Green averaged 22.5 points in two wins last week, including a 20-point game in leading the Panthers over No. 24 Colorado. Green finished the week shooting 48 percent from the field (13-of-27), hauled in eight rebounds, recorded five assists and added four steals. Green was 6-of-16 from the field against Colorado, knocking down five 3-pointers and recording four assists.

Two days later Green helped the Panthers move to 10-1 on the season with a 25-point performance against Grand Canyon. Green was perfect from the free-throw line going 7-of-7 while going 7-of-11 from the field.
