SPORTS SHORTS: Hawkeye women fall to Washington

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team lost to Washington 70-63 on Saturday in the Puerto Rico Clasico.

The loss snapped the Hawkeyes’ (5-2) three-game win streak.

“This was the game that was a good test for us,” head coach Lisa Bluder said. “We didn’t pass this test with flying colors, but we grew. We’re getting better, our second half was better than our first half. That’s growth and that’s what we need.”

Iowa shot 27 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 29-20 at the half.

However, the Hawkeyes improved their shooting to 44 percent and had 16 rebounds to go with their second-half performance.

“We battled back, we won the second half,” Bluder said. “We did a better job on the boards in the second half, we did a better job taking care of the ball in the second half. The positives are that we didn’t quit and we kept fighting.”

Despite the improvement, Washington (6-1) outscored Iowa 27-9 in bench points and points off turnovers at 23-9.

Leading Iowa was Kathleen Doyle, who had a team-high of 17 points and seven rebounds. Monika Czinano posted 15 points and seven rebounds while Makenzie Meyer had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Hawkeyes will face Clemson next on Wednesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will be televised on BTN with tip-off set for 8 p.m.
