SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall steers clear of Tigers

ELDORA — The West Marshall girls’ basketball team held South Hardin to single-digit scoring in each quarter of the Trojans’ 62-27 victory in Tuesday’s NICL West Division clash.

Karlyn Snider scored a game-high 19 points to go with four steals to lead West Marshall (5-0, 3-0). Renae Schaper tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, and Avril Sinning scored 12 points for the Trojans. Katy Reyerson contributed eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win.

Emma Spieker scored 10 points to lead South Hardin (1-5, 0-3), which has lost five in a row.

West Marshall visits Grundy Center for a conference showdown on Friday night.

Mustang girls fall on road at AGWSR

ACKLEY — The AGWSR girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 14-3 lead on East Marshall after one quarter and kept the Mustangs at bay, winning Tuesday’s NICL West Division contest by a score of 45-34.

Alyssa Hames had 19 points and Rachel Sicard 11 to lead the host Cougars (4-2, 2-1), who maintained their 11-point lead at halftime, 24-13. East Marshall (3-4, 1-2) never got closer than nine points in the second half.

Olivia Terrones scoreed 14 points to lead the Mustangs. Delaney Runner sank a pair of 3-pointers and was next in line with six points as East Marshall was held to its season-low.

The Mustangs host Ankeny Christian on Thursday night and return to NICL West play with Friday’s home game against BCLUW.

Meskwaki girls beaten by Colo-NESCO

COLO — The Colo-NESCO girls’ basketball team created a four-way tie atop the Iowa Star Conference’s South Division with a 70-30 rout of Meskwaki Settlement on Tuesday.

The Royals (5-2, 3-1) ran out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and kept pulling away. Rylee Purvis put up 19 points and six rebounds for the Royals, while Lauryn Hill and Emma Stalzer added 11 points apiece.

Payton Tahahwah led Meskwaki (6-2, 3-1) with 12 points and Deandra Navarro added eight more.

The Warriors host Walthill, Neb., on Saturday.

Wolverines top Redhawks for 2nd win

GARWIN — The GMG girls’ basketball team held off North Tama 41-37 in an Iowa Star Conference South Division tilt moved into the old gym because of electrical issues on Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (2-5, 1-3) got their second-straight win in spite of shooting 10-for-32 from the free-throw line. Belle Duncan led the Wolverines with 13 points, Jordan Yilek finished with 10 and Emily Vaughn tallied nine.

Abby DeBoef paced North Tama with 14 points, Katie Kopriva had 12 and Rylee McLean finished with seven as the Redhawks (1-5, 0-4) suffered their fifth-straight loss.

In Friday’s cross-Iowa Star action, GMG hosts Tripoli while North Tama visits Riceville.

North Tama boys outlast host GMG

GARWIN — Ryan McLean scored a team-leading 18 points as the North Tama boys’ basketball squad sunk 12 3-pointers en route to a 59-52 victory over GMG in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division contest.

The game was moved to the old gym at GMG High School because of electrical issues, and North Tama (3-3, 2-2) didn’t seem to mind the small space. The Redhawks made a season-high 12 triples, including two for McLean as North Tama took the lead in the third quarter.

Justin Savadty scored a game-high 21 points to lead GMG, and Avery Bryant finished with 14. Cooper Langenbau added seven points for the Wolverines, who host Tripoli on Friday night.

North Tama travels to face Riceville on Friday in cross-Iowa Star play.

South Hardin takes down Trojan boys

ELDORA — Kael Carr and Garrison Tripp scored 18 points apiece to lead the South Hardin boys’ basketball team to a 66-50 victory over West Marshall in NICL West Division play here Tuesday.

Gavin Ridout added 13 points for the Tigers (3-2, 3-0), who led from wire-to-wire.

Brayden Evertsen scored a career-high 17 points to go with his team-leading eight rebounds and four steals for West Marshall (2-3, 1-2). Gabe Jones chipped in 15 points and Manny Lazard added a career-high 12 points in the loss.

West Marshall goes on the road to face Grundy Center in Friday’s divisional pairing.

Mustang matmen defeat IFA, Baxter

LE GRAND — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team won 13 of 18 contested matches and collected a pair of non-conference dual victories on Tuesday, defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 42-24 and Baxter 72-6.

Carson Burchland claimed his 100th career victory for the Mustangs (8-2), though it came as a forfeit from Baxter.

Three EM/GMG wrestlers were 2-0 in contested matches for the night, as both Tim Benson at 145 pounds and Conner Murty at 195 picked up two wins by pin and Dom Ridout at 120 had a pin and a convincing decision over another ranked foe.

Ridout, polled No. 4 in Class 2A by IAwrestle.com, scored an 11-4 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden’s Brody Hoverston, who is ranked ninth by The Predicament. Ridout ended his night with a second-period pin of Baxter’s Cole Smith to improve to 13-0 on the year.

Samuel Bandstra fought to within a 3-2 loss to IFA’s sixth-ranked Riley Burke in their 160-pound match to start the evening, while Garrett Kerber was defeated 9-4 by No. 9 Cayden Howland at 152 to end the dual.

Hudson hosts East Marshall/GMG and Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center for Thursday’s North Iowa Cedar League triangular.

Bobcat bowlers sweep past Valley

WEST DES MOINES — Marshalltown’s bowling team stayed undefeated with a pair of close wins against Valley on Monday at Val Lanes.

The Bobcat boys won the 2,810-2,780. Lucas Kramer led the team with a 438 series, which was followed by Xander Pickett who rolled a 405. Dylan Cooper posted a 368 and Demitri Ferneau finished with a 367. Rounding out the team was Logan Proffitt, who had a 329, and Hunter Dannen, who bowled a 327.

The Bobcat girls defeated Valley 2,501-2,383. Kylee Witt led the team with a 426 series. Ashly Wiegand followed with a 341 while Sydney Dannen posted a 315. Hannah Slifer rolled a 312, Emily Diggins bowled 297 and Jordan May rounded out the team with a 288.

Marshalltown will host Mason City at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday at Wayward Social.
