LE GRAND — The West Marshall wrestling team came away with two wins in Thursday’s season-opening North Iowa Cedar League triangular, including a sixth-criteria tiebreaker victory over East Marshall/GMG in the finale.

The Trojans and Mustangs tied 39-39, but West Marshall won on the strength of not forfeiting any weights whereas East Marshall/GMG (1-1, 1-1) had two open spots in its lineup.

East Marshall/GMG defeated AGWSR in the opener, 38-27, before West Marshall handled the Cougars 58-22 in round two.

The Mustangs picked up six pins against West Marshall while the Trojans tallied four. Both teams had one win by decision, but EM/GMG’s two forfeits were costly in the end.

West Marshall needed back-to-back pins to pull even with East Marshall/GMG at the end of the dual, and Ben Kielman (170 pounds) and Austin Pfantz (182) delivered to force the tiebreaker criteria into effect.

J.D. Downs (106) and Caden Vellinga (113) also got pins for the Trojans, while Jake Vawter (132) beat Dane Thompson by decision, 5-3, in sudden victory.

Scoring pins for East Marshall/GMG were Dominik Ridout (120), Carson Burchland (138), Tim Benson (145), Garrett Kerber (152), Conner Murty (195) and Isrrael Vargas (285). Samuel Bandstra edged Grant Nason by decision at 160, 7-5.

West Marshall won five of the nine contested matches with AGWSR but capitalized on five forfeits by the Cougars. Blaise Bouchard (126), Vawter, Nason (152) and Elijah Meester (285) scored the pins for the Trojans.

EM/GMG’s opening dual against AGWSR featured the only match between ranked wrestlers as Ridout — No. 8 at 113 — defeated 1A No. 3 Trey Lashbrook in a 2-0 decision at 120. Ridout recorded the only takedown and neither wrestler could escape the other.

East Marshall/GMG heads to the Montezuma Invitational on Saturday, while West Marshall participates in the Dallas Center-Grimes Tournament.
