Cyclones pin their way past Utah Valley

OREM, Utah — The No. 11 Iowa State wrestling team trampled through Utah Valley in Thursday’s Big 12 Conference opener for the Cyclones, as ISU pitched a shutout of the Wolverines, 45-0.

Iowa State (3-1, 1-0) piled up bonus points with five wins by fall — four of which were first-period pins — as Utah Valey (1-6) dropped to 0-4 in Big 12 action.

Joel Shapiro, Alex Mackall, Ian Parker, Ryan Leisure and David Carr recorded Iowa State’s wins by fall in the decisive victory.

The Cyclones continue their road trip with Saturday’s visit to the Sun Devil Duals hosted by Arizona State. Iowa State meets Campbell at noon, Harvard at 2 p.m. and Arizona State at 7 p.m. at Chase Field — home of Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks — in Phoenix. It’s the first wrestling event to be held at an MLB stadium.
