Mohawks snap skid at Bobcats’ expense

MASON CITY — Mason City sophomore Corey Miner scored his team’s 10 points en route to a career-high 33, helping the Mohawks beat the Marshalltown boys’ basketball team 84-59 in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference make-up game.

Rescheduled from Friday, Marshalltown’s second game after the holiday break got off to a slow start. Mason City jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the opening quarter and the Bobcats (3-7, 1-3) never recovered.

“We got off to a really slow start, just turnover after turnover, and they jumped on us early,” MHS head coach Michael Appel said. “One of their better players, if not their best player, had their first 10 points … and he’s a guy we couldn’t let get into an offensive rhythm.

“It was just self-inflicted wounds.”

The Mohawks (3-6, 1-3) led 44-23 at the half and maintained at least a 16-point lead the rest of the way.

“Eighty-four points is way too many, we’re just having a hard time guarding,” said Appel. “We’ve got to lock in on some stuff in practice and figure out what’s going on here. We’re not closing out well enough, letting guys drive right by us, not getting help-side [defense] — just getting back to the basic things and understanding what we need to do.”

Armonniey Thomas scored a team-leading 17 points for the Bobcats. Austin Shomo and Drake Kapayou both made three 3-pointers, finishing with 11 and nine points, respectively. Will Van Buren also scored nine points for the Bobcats, who have lost three in a row.

In addition to Miner’s big night, Carter Thomas scored 15 points and Brandon Shipman had 14 more as Mason City snapped a six-game losing streak.

Southeast Polk visits the Roundhouse tonight for a CIML Iowa conference clash, and top-ranked Waukee comes to town on Friday.

“We’re going to keep working on it in practice — that’s all we can do,” Appel said. “There’s a lot of games left and if we play the right way, we play solid, we’ll give ourselves a chance.”
