SPORTS SHORTS: 3A No. 14 West Marshall clubs Cubs

STATE CENTER — Four players scored at least nine points as the Class 3A No. 14 West Marshall girls’ basketball team took down a former assistant coach and neighboring Nevada, 47-34, on Thursday.

Jordan Bentley, a former assistant to West Marshall head coach Fred Zeller, is the head coach at Nevada. Ellie Tuhn led the Cubs (7-8) with 11 points in the wire-to-wire loss.

Karlyn Snider scored 13 point to pace a balanced effort by the Trojans (9-1). Avril Sinning had 12 points, Katy Reyerson finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Renae Schaper contributed nine points, nine boards and three steals.

Comets clout South Hardin girls

ELDORA — Chloe Walters poured in 23 points to go with seven rebounds as the BCLUW girls’ basketball team handled South Hardin, 67-38, in Thursday’s NICL West Division makeup game.

Allison Engle added 16 points and five rebounds, Lizzie Garber came up with 12 points and five assists, while Betula Messerly tallied six points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Payton Pekarek also scored six points and Jade Hammers had four more for the Comets (11-5, 4-3).

Emma Spieker scored 11 points to lead South Hardin and Josie Raska added 10 for the Tigers (2-11, 0-8).

Trojans can’t climb out of deep hole

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team nearly rallied all the way back from a 13-point deficit in an eventual 45-42 loss in Thursday’s cross-NICL contest.

Bryce Griffin led Hudson (6-5) with 14 points and Carter Swope added eight more.

Gabe Jones powered West Marshall (3-9) with a game-high 23 points to go with his six rebounds and two assists. Manny Lazard finished with seven points and Brayden Evertsen tallied six points and three steals.
