SPORTS SHORTS: Comets clip Colo-NESCO’s win streak

COLO — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team ended Colo-NESCO’s nine-game winning streak with a 49-48 victory over the host Royals in a non-conference game here Monday.

Allison Engle led the Comets with 18 points and five assists to go with seven rebounds in the win. Payton Pekarek added 11 points, Chloe Walters finished with eight points and 11 rebounds, and Betula Messerly added seven points and six boards.

BCLUW (10-5) trailed 32-20 at the half before outscoring Colo-NESCO 29-16 in the second half for the one-point victory.

Rylee Purvis scored a game-high 22 points for the Royals (9-3), making four 3-pointers, including one before the final buzzer.

BCLUW goes back out on the road Thursday for an NICL West Division game against South Hardin in Eldora.

BCLUW boys beat back Royals 62-30

COLO — Jack Hughes scored 14 points, Treye Teske tallied 12 more and the BCLUW boys’ basketball team used a balanced effort to beat Colo-NESCO 62-30 on Monday night.

Noah Gallentine, Jesse Moore and Mason Yantis each contributed nine points for the Comets (6-7), who led 39-15 at the half in the non-conference win over Colo-NESCO (1-10).

BCLUW visits Eldora on Thursday for an NICL West Division makeup game against South Hardin.

Pella Christian takes down Trojans

PELLA — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team fell in an early hole and couldn’t climb out against Pella Christian, losing 71-54 in Monday’s non-conference clash.

Isaiah Gritters scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack by the Golden Eagles (8-4). Ryan Vande Haar had 14 points and Jack Vermeer added 12 more. Dan Jungling and Luke Mulder netted nine apiece and Levi Schelhaas added eight off the bench.

Caleb Keigan made six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points to lead West Marshall (3-8). Manny Lazard contributed 16 points, and Gabe Jones had 13 points and four rebounds.

The Trojans host Hudson on Thursday in a make-up game.
