BIG FOUR: Green’s 27 leads UNI past Illinois St

CEDAR FALLS — AJ Green had 27 points and surpassed the 1,000-point milestone and Northern Iowa topped Illinois State 71-63 on Wednesday night.

Trae Berhow scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Panthers (22-3, 11-2 Missouri Valley Conference), who earned their sixth straight victory. Austin Phyfe added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Illinois State led 40-33 at the half after a 21-5 run. Northern Iowa broke away from a tie with 12 straight points in the middle of the second half to earn the win.

DJ Horne had 16 points and six rebounds for the Redbirds (8-17, 3-10). Dedric Boyd added 11 points and Keith Fisher III 10.

Illinois State defeated Northern Iowa 76-70 on Dec. 31. Northern Iowa matches up against Loyola of Chicago on the road on Saturday.

Missouri St. 97, Drake 62

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Keandre Cook had 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Missouri State beat Drake 97-62 on Wednesday night.

Missouri State led 24-19 midway through the first half and erupted for 28 points in the final 8:48 to go up 52-30 at intermission. The Bears were 11-of-17 shooting from 3-point range in just the first half. They finished 14 of 25 overall from beyond the arc.

Lamont West and Gaige Prim scored 15 points each for Missouri State (12-14, 6-7 Missouri Valley Conference).

The 97 points were a season best for Missouri State. The Bears have won two of three after a three-game losing streak.

Noah Thomas had 14 points for the Bulldogs (16-10, 6-7), D.J. Wilkins score 13 and Jonah Jackson 10. The Bulldogs are 1-4 in the their last five.

WOMEN

Iowa St. 69, Texas 51

AUSTIN, Texas — Iowa State’s Ashley Joens and Kristin Scott both cashed in on 20-point performances as the Cyclones (15-8, 7-5 Big 12) went on the road and routed Texas (15-8, 7-4).

The Cyclones’ 18-point victory over the Longhorns marks the largest victory over Texas since 2001.

Joens finished with a game-high 23 points, going 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. She also had a team-high nine rebounds. Scott tallied 20 points and seven boards, and Rae Johnson chipped in with 10 points.

Carli Collier had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Texas.
