Musgrave named NSIC’s top freshman

Jessica Musgrave

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Upper Iowa University freshman guard Jessica Musgrave was named the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s Freshman of the Year after her first campaign with the Peacock women’s basketball team.

Musgrave, a South Tama County graduate, was named to the five-player all-NSIC Freshman Team while becoming the third player in Peacock history to be named the top conference rookie.

“Jess had a tremendous freshman season and we are proud of her accomplishments,” said UIU head coach Nate Oakland. “She has put in the work and she has earned it by showing up and competing every single day. We are excited to continue to build for the future and Jess will play a huge role in our progress as a program.”

Musgrave averaged a team-leading 14.7 points per game during conference play, ranking ninth in the NSIC. She shot 40.5 percent from the floor, 36.7 percent from 3-point range and 71.7 percent at the free-throw line. Musgrave also ranked 12th in the conference with 6.7 rebounds per game.

Musgrave scored in double figures in 17 of Upper Iowa’s 22 conference games, getting at least 20 points five times, while recording four double-doubles in NSIC play. She was the only Peacock honored on the year-ending teams.

Upper Iowa (3-26) had its season ended in Wednesday’s first round of NSIC Tournament play.
