Smoldt named second-team all-NSIC

Joe Smoldt

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Upper Iowa University junior guard Joe Smoldt has been named to the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s men’s basketball second team, the league announced Thursday.

Smoldt, a 2017 Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School graduate, was one of three Peacocks honored on the all-NSIC teams. Fellow Iowa native Jareese Williams of Mason City also was a second-team pick, and Jake Hilmer, a freshman from North Linn, was named to the honorable mention squad.

Smoldt, who was the NSIC Freshman of the Year in 2017-18, started all 22 conference games for Upper Iowa this winter, averaging 13.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 40.9 percent from the field. The Reinbeck native ranked sixth in the conference in free-throw percentage (84.3) and scored in double figures in 16 of 22 NSIC games.

“Joe has been a great leader for us all year long and does so many little things to make everyone around him better,” said UIU head coach Brooks McKowen. “An all-conference nod is a great reward for all the hard work he as put in for himself and his team. Without him we could not have the success we have had this season.”

The Peacocks (19-10) meet Minnesota State-Moorhead in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
