SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcats announce date of fundraiser

The Marshalltown High School Athletic Fundraiser Golf Outing has been scheduled for June 16 at the American Legion Golf Course.

The Bobcats’ annual fund-raising event is traditionally a four-person, 18-hole best shot golf event.

Further details with be announced at a future date.

3-on-3 youth hoops tourney in March

HUBBARD — Helping Hands, a volunteer youth organization, is sponsoring its 34th annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on March 21 at the South Hardin Middle School gymnasium.

There are six different age divisions in both boys and girls for players in grades 2-12 and post-high school, and there will be eight teams per division. Awards will be given to all teams depending on the final standing.

Hawkeyes’ Garza adds to watch lists

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa junior center Luka Garza has been named to a pair of midseason watch lists: the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Naismith College Player of the Year Award.

Entering the weekend, Garza ranks first nationally with 10 20-point/10-rebound games this season. He ranks fourth in scoring (23.1 points per game), third in minutes played (30.2), is 13th in double-doubles (13) and 34th in rebounding (9.9).

Garza is one of 12 semifinalists for the Oscar Robertson award and one of 30 players listed for the Naismith award. The Oscar Robertson Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding men’s college basketball player by the United States Basketball Writers Association, while the Naismith Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding player who achieves tremendous on-court success.

Garza is also a finalist for the Wooden Award, the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award, and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.

ISU’s Scott a finalist for Leslie award

ATLANTA — Iowa State women’s basketball player Kristin Scott has been named as one of 10 finalists for the Lisa Leslie Award, given annually to the nation’s top center.

Scott entered the weekend averaging 15 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Cyclones while shooting 47.6 percent from the field. She also has 40 blocks on defense.

In Big 12 Conference play, Scott’s averages rise to 17 points and 7.4 boards per game while shooting nearly 53 percent from the floor. She is one of four Big 12 players to make the award’s final 10, along with Charli Collier from Texas, Queen Egbo of Baylor, and Texas Tech’s Brittany Brewer.

Five finalists will be named in March, and the winner of the 2020 Lisa Leslie Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards on April 10 in Los Angeles.

Rhine makes award list a second time

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Drake University senior women’s basketball player Sara Rhine has been named a finalist for the Katrina McClain Award for the second-straight season.

Rhine entered the weekend leading the Missouri Valley Conference while ranking fourth in the country shooting 66.8 percent from the field. She averages 17.8 points per game, which is second in the MVC behind teammate Becca Hittner, and 7.3 rebounds per game, which is fifth-best in the Valley.

The Katrina McClain award is given annually to the nation’s top power forward, as presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. McClain was a two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year at Georgia.

Of the 10 award finalists, Rhine is one of only two (Princeton’s Bella Alarie) not from a Power 5 conference.

Jones joins Top 10 for Miller Award

ATLANTA — Iowa State women’s basketball player Ashley Joens was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Top 10, presented annually to the nation’s top small forward by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Joens, a sophomore, entered the weekend averaging 21.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She is the only women’s player in the country averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per contest, and she has compiled 13 double-doubles this winter.

Joens has been named the Big 12’s Player of the Week five times, and she’s a part of the Naismith Trophy’s Midseason Top 30, which honors the nation’s top player.

Iowa State’s Bridget Carleton won the Cheryl Miller Award last season.
