SPORTS SHORTS: Terrones leads Mustangs past Warriors

Another 30-plus point game from senior guard Olivia Terrones carried the East Marshall girls’ basketball team past Meskwaki Tuesday night. The Mustangs (7-14) got 35 points from Terrones, who made 16 shots from the floor and hit three of her eight free-throw attempts.

The Mustangs were up 32-24 at halftime and outscored the Warriors (13-7) 30-20 in the second half to seal the win.

Peyton Tahahwah scored a team-high 17 points for Meskwaki and Deandra Navarro scored 14 points.

Up next for East Marshall is a trip to play North Linn in regionals Feb. 18. Meskwaki hosts HLV on Thursday.

Trojans pull away from North Tama

STATE CENTER — A 5-4 first quarter wasn’t the start West Marshall (5-15) or North Tama (8-12) wanted in Tuesday night boys’ basketball action. But a 15-point second quarter gave the Trojans a 20-11 halftime lead and set them on the course to a 45-31 victory.

The Trojans were led by Caleb Keigan with 11 points, while Luke Pennell led North Tama with 15 points. Neither team had another player reach double figures.

Joey Tollefson added eight points for West Marshall, and Manny Lazard had six points and eight rebounds.

The second half saw West Marshall pull away with 14 points in the fourth quarter to pick up its first win in seven games.

Up next for the Trojans is a road game Thursday night against Dike-New Hartford.

Joens named to midseason watch list

ATLANTA – Iowa State women’s basketball player Ashley Joens was named to the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy Midseason List for the Women’s Player of the Year. Joens’ appearance on the list is the first of the season as she was not included on the initial watch list of 50 players.

Joens has had a tremendous start to her sophomore campaign, averaging 21.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She is the only player in the nation averaging 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. She has been a double-double machine this season, collecting 13 double-doubles on the season. Joens has been named Big 12 Player of the Week five times, while no other Big 12 player has claimed the honor more than twice. Joens also earned espnW, National Player of the week after a 41-point performance against Wright State.

Joens is one of just three Big 12 players to make the Midseason Top-30, joining Baylor’s Lauren Cox and NaLyssa Smith.

The 10 semifinalists will be announced on March 3, and the finalists will be revealed on March 20. The winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women’s Player of the Year will be announced on April 4.

Hittner named Valley Player of Week

ST. LOUIS — Becca Hittner earned her seventh career Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week award, the conference announced Monday. The Drake senior averaged 27 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists per game. Hittner also hit 9-of-13 3-pointers and made 17-of-18 free-throws.

Hittner scored 31 points in a win over Southern Illinois and had nine rebounds and five assist as well. In the Bulldogs’ loss to Missouri State, Hittner still performed well with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Hittner is now second all-time in Drake history with 241 3-pointers and is nine points away from 2,000 career points.

Drake plays Evansville Thursday at 6 p.m. on the road, with television coverage on ESPN3.
