SPORTS SHORTS: Tiger women fall in home finale

Poor shooting was once again a culprit for the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team Saturday against Southeastern (17-11) in a 79-66 loss. The Tigers were in their final home game of the season and fall to 8-21 on the season.

The Tigers fell down by seven after the first quarter and were held to 34.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Tigers were led in scoring by Rachelle Smith with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists. Laurin Lyons was the only other Tiger to reach double-figures with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Southeastern shot 49.2 percent from the floor and hit eight of 17 3-point attempts. Emma Knipe scored a game-high 22 points for the Blackhawks.

The Tigers play Northeast in the first round of the Region XI tournament Wednesday in Norfolk, Neb.

Tigers blasted by No. 4 Indian Hills

The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team ended its regular season on a sour note in a 92-58 loss to fourth-ranked Indian Hills on Saturday. The Tigers (5-25) were under pressure from the beginning, trailing 45-25 after the first 20 minutes of action and allowing a 56.4 percent shooting performance from the Warriors.

The Warriors hit 16 3-pointers and had five players reach double-figures. Tyon Grant-Foster scored a game-high 19 points to lead Indian Hills.

The Tigers were out-rebounded 35-21 and were led in scoring by Jaylin Scott with 16 points. JyDonn Griffith got 13 points and Caleb Jacobs scored 12.
