OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team held No. 4 Indian Hills within striking distance until a decisive run by the Warriors led them to a 76-58 victory in Wednesday’s NJCAA Region XI Tournament semifinal at the Hellyer Center.

Marshalltown CC (6-26) led by as many as five points and trailed by as many as nine in the first half but held Indian Hills (28-3) until the second half. A layup by Craig Philip got MCC back within 11, 52-41, before the Warriors started a 14-0 run that spanned more than five minutes and left the visiting Tigers down by 25 in their eventual season-ending defeat.

Four of Indian Hills’ starters scored in double figures, led by Drake Jeffries with a game-high 20 points. Jeffries made six 3-pointers to help the Warriors beat MCC for the third time this season and advance to Saturday’s Region XI championship game against second-seeded Southeastern (22-8). The Blackhawks beat Iowa Western 67-60 in the other semifinal.

Jaylin Scott scored a team-high 16 points for the Tigers, while Eric Amandio added another 15. Both MCC players made three 3-pointers in the loss.

Derrick Paige came off the bench to contribute eight points, and Quavon Blackwood chipped in six points.

MCC’s second-leading scorer Caleb Jacobs was limited to four points but pitched in with five rebounds and five assists. JyDonn Griffith led the Tigers with six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Indian Hills got another four 3-pointers and 18 points from Tyon Grant-Foster, Chris Payton piled up 13 points and eight rebounds, and Malique Jacobs finished with 11 points for the Warriors, who host Saturday’s regional final at 7 p.m.
